A Brief History of KL 三间住 Pork Noodles
Sam Kan Chong 三间住 may not be a Familiar Term for Most Singaporeans. 🇸🇬🤔 My First Encounter with this was a Food Stall in Taman Abad near KSL City Mall. Back then, I thought the Dish wasn't really anything special but the Unique Name lingered in my mind. 🤔 It was only when I did further research on it did I discover its History. 🇲🇾🤔
According to Multiple Sources Online, the name 三间住 actually means "3 Adjacent Shops". 🏠🏠🏠 Originated in the 1950s at KL Jalan Silang started by a Chinese Immigrant from Canton, China. 🇨🇳🤔 It got popular due to its Uniquely Square Shaped Meatballs. 🧆 The Original Shop is no longer around but its legacy remains. Today, 三间住 refers to this Dish and is a Unique Specialty of KL. 🇲🇾
The Most Well-Known Eatery for this Dish is Restoran Win Heng Seng in Jalan Imbi but I specifically chose this Eatery in Jinjang instead 🤔 because it has an apparently 40 years History that is interestingly located Nearest to the Actual Original Stall. (About 4km) In addition, this place is also supposedly opened by one of the Direct Descendants of the Original Owner so there's that. 🤔
Location of the Eatery.
The Place is a Very Old Looking Non-Airconditioned Kopitiam that is Somewhat Hidden in a Residential Area. The Surrounding area has a Very Quiet and Serene Feel to it when I arrived. 😌 Nothing Touristy about this, it looks like an Eatery that serves the Locals in the Area. 👍 Although there weren't any Customers on a Saturday at 4.42pm, More Customers started streaming in as time goes on with alot of them ordering Takeaway as I observed. 🛍️🤔

The Place is owned by a Chinese Boss who wasn't around, and his Myanmar Staffs took over the cooking and running of the place in his Absence. 👨🍳 They are Friendly, Polite and mostly keep to themselves. Because of the Boss's Absence however, there was an Interesting Incident I faced when it came to Payment later after my Meal. 💵😅 Do also note that this place doesn't sell any Hot Beverages like Kopi or Tea. ☕🤔 The Only Drinks they have are Sugared Ones. 🥤 Anyway it took 3 Mins for the Dish to be served up.

🍜 Sam Kan Chong Pork Ball Soup (Small, Yellow Noodles, Soup) = RM8.50
Quality of the Condiments
The Red Sambal is a Rich Thick Chilli Oil with a Very Solid Texture and Taste of Minced Haebee. 🌶️😋 Salty and Slightly Spicy, I wouldn't say this is a Very Complex Level of Sambal, but its still pretty Decent Quality mostly because of its Haebee-ness. 👍 Not Bad.
The Actual Dish itself is a Bowl of Pork Noodles that is Nicely Presented. 🐷🍜 For some reason, I thought it had a Homely Comforting Look to it. ♥️
The Whole Dish Consists of:
🍲 Soup
🍜 Yellow Noodles
🐟 2 Classic 三间住 Oblong Shaped Fishballs
🐷 2 Lup Cheong
🐷 Some Minced Pork Bak Chor.

🍲 Quality of the Soup
Cloudy in Appearance, this tastes like a Soup you'd normally get with Fishball Noodle. 🍜🤔 Something about this though has a Very Old-School 古早味 type of Taste to it. 🤔 This is the type of 浓浓 Type of Classic Fishball Soup that I remembered fondly back in the 1980s. ♥️
This is Definitely a Much Higher Level of Fishball Soup compared to Today's Dilluted Simple Fishball Soup you'd find in most Standard SG Kopitiams and Foodcourts. 😅 Absolutely Not Dilluted or Bland, it is a Tad Alkaliney due to the Noodles, Slightly Salty. I did detect a Slight Bit of MSG added but its not too much. 👍 Overall this was a Very Decent Quality Tasting Fishball Noodle type of Soup.
🐟 Quality of the 三间住 Oblong Shaped Fishballs
The Main Star of the Show, there were 2 Pieces. 🍡 Uniquely Oblong in Shape, they were quite Large Pieces. I love the Bite Texture which has this "Bouncy Squishy" Effect 💦 when you bite into it that will also squirt out some of the Soup in your Mouth. 💦😋 There is a Slight Hint of Fishiness although not Overly Fishy. 🐟 Its the Juicy Squishy Bite Texture of this Fishball that did it for me. 💦😋

🍜 Quality of the Noodles
Actually you can choose whatever Noodles you want. I specifically chose this because apparently Yellow Noodles are supposedly the Classic Noodle Carbs for this Dish. 🍜🤔 Nothing really special about them, they were Most Certainly from a Package. Amount given is Acceptable and Filling for the Price. 👍 Not QQ but more of a Softer Bite, it forms the Soft Carb Canvas of the Dish.

🐷 Quality of the Lup Cheong and Bak Chor
The Lup Cheong Pieces given in this is Thick and Meaty not the usual type of Thin Thin Slices. 🐷😋 Fleshy and Meaty, this tastes more like the type of Whole Roasted Chinese Sausage that you'd buy from a Pasar Malam, rather then a Typical Dry Dry Thin Thin type of Lup Cheong. 😋 I think Malaysians call this Siew Cheong if I'm not wrong? 🤔 A Tad Oily and Salty, this added a Nice Meaty Element to the Dish. 🐷😋
The Minced Bak Chor also added alot to the Dish. 🐷👍 It has this Deeply Braised Saltish Note with a Savoury Solid Porkish Meaty Flavour that is also Not Overly Porky. 😋 Combined with some Scallion Slices, this is a Pretty Solid Tasting Quality Bak Chor. 👍

Eating Everything together is like eating a More Meatier than Usual Fishball Noodles. 🍜🤔 Every Ingredient here worked well in Harmony together with nothing clashing. 👍 Abit of Oily Meaty Lup Cheong, some Saltish Meaty Bak Chor, and a Bite from that Unique Juicy Squishy Oblong Fishball and finished off with a Soft Tender Noodles Carb Canvas makes this a Satisfying Meal. 🍜😋A Minor Incident I encountered when trying to make my Payment after the Meal. 💵😅
Remember I talked about this? Because the Chinese Boss was not around, I can only pay via Wireless as the Boss did not allow his Staffs to handle Cash. 💵🙅♂️
Credit Cards also cannot use. 💳🙅♂️ The only way is via Malaysia's Local Payment like TnG or Duitnow etc which I don't have. Die Die No Workaround. 🙅♂️😅
This is where I really appreciate the assistance of a Very Kind Malaysian Lady who offered to help pay, ♥️ and of course I repaid her in Cash. Hahaha without her assistance, I really would not know what to do. 😅 She'll probably never see this Post, but I would like to sincerely thank her here for her Kind Assistance! ♥️
So do take note of this if you want to come here to eat as a Tourist. If the Chinese Boss around, there is No Way to Pay in Cash, not even Debit/Credit Cards. 💵💳🙅♂️

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At the Price of RM8.50 (S$2.60), this is an Affordable Price and is worth it for this Dish. 👍 What you are getting is what I would describe as a Very Classic Old School 1980s Style of Fishball Noodles. 🍜😋 Compared to Today's Sad Dilluted Fishball Noodles Soup you'd find in Regular SG Kopitiams/Food Courts, 🇸🇬😅 the one here is Noticeably Higher Quality in Comparison.
The Uniquely Oblong Shaped 三间住 Fishballs may look Gimmicky, but I like its Juicy Squishy Bite Texture. 💦😋 Its not just a Fishball with a Funny Shape. 😅 What I really like is how well thought-out every ingredients in this Dish were and how all of them worked together with Nothing that Clashed. 🍜👍 Like I mentioned in the Main Review, eating this is like eating a More Meatier than Usual Fishball Noodles. 🍜😋

I am also fascinated by the History of this Dish which was much more interesting than I had originally thought. 🤔 Having said that, 三间住 Noodles are available everywhere in KL 🇲🇾 and this isn't even the Most Famous among them. 😅 But for some reason, this Eatery and its Surrounding Area just gave me a Very Quiet and Serene Vibe. 😌 Not at all Touristy, this place is located in a Very Peaceful Quiet Neighbourhood and feels like a Place that the Locals actually visit for their Meals. 👍
If you are nearby the Area, I can certainly recommend to give this a try. 👍 Do take note that you will need to prepare some form of Wireless Payment like TnG or Duitnow as they will not accept Cash or Cards if their Chinese Boss is not around though. 💵💳🙅♂️😅
