This is an Eatery that I always see being mentioned in Food Blogs, promoted in Social Media whenever I look for Eateries in Stulang Laut. They're apparently famous for their Nasi Goreng and Hot Plate Cooked Seafood.

The Actual Place is a Very Non-Descript Eatery that looks like it has been around for quite awhile.
Even with Standing Fans available, it still felt Very Warm and Humid.

Despite how Famous and Popular it is, even on a Sunday Long Weekend at 3.00pm the place felt Empty 冷清清. Customers only start streaming in at 4.00pm onwards and even so it was Hardly Crowded even on a Weekend. Maybe they focused more on Night Supper?

I wouldn't call the Staffs very friendly, they were more quiet and reserved. Sometimes they have this stare without Smiling but it doesn't feel they're unfriendly, just... y'know that sort of Blank Stare "Thousand Mile Look" that you get when you talk to Service Staffs sometimes?

How to Order your Food

1) Go up to one of the Side Area where the Seafood are in a Ice Bed. This is where you choose and order what you want.

2) Seafood Price on that Price List Board is calculated by 100g (Minimum Order 200g)

3) Take a Metal Tag and go back to your seat to wait for your Food to be sent to you. Pay when its served up.
It took about 6 Mins for Everything to be served up together.

Nasi Goreng = RM11.00

This is the Signature Dish of this Place, and in the Various Social Media Posts I see about this place, I always see it being Freshly Fried on the Hot Plate Skillet. I was so ready to take Videos of them cooking it...

So imagine my Disappointment, when the Staff just handed me a Pre-Pack of Already Fried Nasi Goreng that has been sitting on a Table. Immediately my Heart Sank. I looked at him, and he looked back at me Awkwardly Smiling. I wanted to tell him I wanted a Freshly Fried one, but I didn't bother because he also wasn't very conversant in English and I couldn't speak Fluent Malay.

Boom there goes the Score already.

Unfurling the Banana Leaf, I can see that it consists of:

Fried Rice
1 Prawn
Egg Omelette Pieces
Some Small Slices of Sotong, Fishcakes

Quality of the Fried Rice

Despite not Freshly Fried, it was luckily still Mildly Warm. There is No 香气 and the Wok Hei is Long Gone of course. (if there was any in the first place that is). Amount of Rice feels Acceptable and they were 粒粒分明, Not Mushy.

Slightly Darker sort of Fried Rice, the Taste is Sweetish with a Noticeable Overnight Rice sort of Taste which is Correct, but I also wouldn't call this Good Quality.
Slight Presence of Ikan BIlis within. This is a Average to Below Average Level of Fried Rice.

Quality of the Prawn and Rest of the Ingredients.

The Prawn was a Larger Shell-On with Half its Head chopped off. This is the Easiest (and Laziest way) to remove the Feelers and Barbs. Just as I suspected, because its Shell-On, they did not bother to Devein the Digestive Tract properly as you can see in the Photo. Mushy and Dry in Texture, I can taste that this Prawn has been sitting for awhile already, This is a Low Quality Prawn despite it being a Larger Sized One.

The Other Ingredients taste as much as you'd expect. Sad, Low Quality and Mushy, the Whole Nasi Goreng is a Complete Fail in both Effort and the Fact that its Not Freshly Fried. Didn't even bother to finish this after taking about 4 Bites and that is 4 Bites Too Many.

Sambal Sotong (200g) = RM20.00

Because this was Freshly Fried Hot on the Skillet, this tasted Very Much Better. The Sambal they used for this is Quite Power because inhaling the Fume from this was Fierce as I taking the Photo. And he did it quick and fast, just like how Sotong is supposed to be cooked.

Quality of the Sambal

Indeed Strong Sambal, it has a Strong Chilli Spicy Fume that will immediately attack your Throat.
Spicy and Bites abit but once the Initial Spicy Assault settles down, it maintains a Moderate Heat on your Tongue.

The Sambal's Main Taste is Onion Based, a Tad Sweetish but Not Overly So. I wouldn't call this a Very Complex Level of Sambal but its Decent. It is Very Oily though. People who cannot take even abit of Spicy might feel this is Too Spicy and for people who can take Spicy, I feel this is Fine.

Quality of the Sotong

200g of Sotong felt like quite alot of Pieces. This was Quite a Chonky Boy. I liked that its cooked Soft and Tender and Not Overcooked until its too Firm. Because its Slathered with all that Sambal, I can't really taste the Actual Sotongness and I couldn't tell if its really that Fresh, but there were No Foul Odours or Mushy Taste at least.

Decent, but nothing particularly Amazing. I do like that the Dish really Bloomed when you squeeze some Lime into it, giving it an Additional Sourish Tang.
Eating the Nasi Goreng with this Sambal Sotong slightly improves the Fried Rice, but again Nothing really Particularly Amazing.

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

At the Price of RM11.00 (S$3.50) for this Nasi Goreng is an Affordable Price for the Amount of Fried Rice you're getting, but I would say Don't Bother.
The Fact that this Nasi Goreng is Not Freshly Fried but already sitting on a Table somewhere dropped the Score Drastically. For a Dish that is supposedly a Main Signature this is Unacceptable.

Fried Rice aside, nothing in this has any Value and there was Zero Effort from what I see. From how they just Simply Chopped off the Prawn Head to remove the Feelers and Barbs, to the Fact that they didn't even bother to Devein the Digestive Tract.
Extremely Low Effort and Low Quality Nasi Goreng. Don't bother to waste your Money on this.

At the Price of RM20.00 (S$6.30) for this 200g Sambal Sotong is not a Bad Price for quite a Chonky Boy. At the very least this was Freshly Fried on the Spot.
While the Sambal itself isn't Super Complex or Super Amazing, it does its duty Adequately to Spice up the Dish. Hitting it with a Squeeze of the Lime Juice will make it Bloom.

I can't tell if the Sotong itself is Super Fresh due to the Sambal slathered all over it, but at least its not Overcooked until Too Firm and Leathery. I wouldn't call this Amazing but at least its Acceptable.

For a Place that has been so heavily promoted on Social Media and even appearing on Many Top Lists for Must-Visit Eateries in Stulang Laut, I am disappointed with the Actual Place. Not as Popular as it appears in Social Media Videos for this Place, the Whole Place felt 冷清清 even on a Weekend. The Staffs, while Not Unfriendly, also have a Dazed and Bored 无精打采 Lethargic Look about them.

The Whole Place just didn't spark any Excitement in me in either Culinary Quality or Effort.
Add to it, that the Place felt Extremely Warm and Humid, personally I don't feel it is specifically worth it to come to Stulang Laut just for this. Not the Worst Place I've visited in JB, but personally I feel this Place was just Below Average Level for me.
