A Brief History of Bak Cheng BKT

I first got to know of this Famous Place from an Article by JohorKaki. 📝 Apparently, back in 2006, they were awarded the title of "Malaysia King of BKT". 👑🇲🇾 Not just JB mind you, but the WHOLE of Malaysia. 🇲🇾 Yes, even beating Klang itself! 😳

One of the Member in the Judging Panel was even led by the Famous Late Food Critic Chua Lam 蔡瀾 himself, so you can imagine how Prestigious this Award was. 🤔

Bak Cheng BKT itself has a Very Interesting History and One Story goes that its Original Late Founder was so Legendary for his Fiery Temper, 🔥 he even tossed an Entire Day's Pot of BKT straight into a River in a Fit of Anger. 😳 If you are interested to know more, I would recommend to check out JohorKaki's Article where he wrote a Very Extensive History about it. 📝

Bak Cheng BKT Today

Fascinated with its History, I specifically marked this place for my Sept 2025 JB Trip visiting both this Main Shop in Taman Mount Austin and a Branch in Taman Sentosa. 🤔 Today's Review will be the Main Store while I will feature the Branch Tomorrow.
If you are thinking of taking Grab here, the Actual Name on Grab's Map is "Chuan Hian" as you can see in the Screenshot. 🚗

The Eatery itself is a Non-Airconditioned Old Kopitiam located in a Relatively Quiet Neighbourhood. I'll be honest, even for such a Storied and Famous Place awarded as "Malaysia King of BKT" 👑🇲🇾 in 2006, the Whole Place was rather Quiet 冷清清 without much Customers even on a Saturday Afternoon. 🤔 To be fair, it was an Off-Lunch Hour around 3.30pm when I was there though.

Run by a Middle Aged Chinese Man with Myanmar Staffs, they were Polite and Mostly kept to themselves. At least they didn't give any 死人脸 even when I did not order any Carbs, Extra Ingredients or even Drinks. 😅
It took about 3 Mins for the Dish to be served up.

BKT Mixed (Soup, No Rice) =  RM16.00

Longtime Readers of this Blog will know that I never add any Extra Ingredients to BKT as I am more interested to see if the BKT is worth it even at this Basic Default. 🤔 Because if the Base Quality itself is no good, adding any Extra Chapalang Ingredients to it will not improve any further. 😅

Of course I dissected the Whole Dish which consists of:
🐷 3 Pork Rib Cuts
🐷 3 Pieces of Pork Belly
🐷 3 Pieces of Pig Intestine

🍲 Quality of the Soup Broth

At my 1st Taste, I thought this only tasted like a Simple Braised 卤水 with Hardly any Herbal Presence. 🤔 Subsequent Tastes however let me detect a Very Mild Herbal Aftertaste of 甘草? 🌿 But even so, this Herbal is Very Subtle Light and Easily Missable tbh. The Whole Soup is More Braised than Herbal actually. 🤔

🐷 Quality of the Pork Ribs

Interestingly, I thought the Meat here tasted Slightly More Tender than Belly Meat. 🍖🤔 Again, nothing really special about this, just tasted like any other Regular BKT Type of Pork Ribs out there.

🐷 Quality of the Pork Belly

More Fatty than Meaty. 🍖🤔 Firmish Bite Texture, the Fats are not like those Super Soft Melt in Mouth type. A Tad Porky that can feel Jelak if you were to eat more of it. Overall I feel there is nothing special about this. 🤔

🐷 Quality of the Pig Intestines

A Tad Unusual to add Intestines to a JB-Styled BKT. Initially does have a Soft Tender Texture, but the Inner Filling has a Very Bitter Taste. 🤔 Not as Crazy Bitter like Crushing a Pill Bitter as in the Case of
汶強粿條仔 Restoran Woon Kiang in Stulang Laut. 💊😅  Some Other Pieces of Intestines however don't have this Bitterness, so I'm not sure if its a "Not Cleaned Properly" issue or not. 🤔

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

At the Price of RM16.00 (S$4.90) is not say Cheap for this Bowl of BKT. 🤔 For a BKT that is crowned "Malaysia King of BKT" back in 2006, 👑🇲🇾 with a Very Storied 有龙有虎 History 🐲🐯, I'll be very honest in saying I don't find this tasting much different from any other JB Braised Non-Herbal 卤水 BKT tbh. 🤔

If you are looking for Very Gao Gao Herbal, this is not it. 🌿🙅‍♂️ I don't feel it is worth the Time and Effort to specifically come to JB just to eat this. 🤔
Personally, I'm more interested in its Past Storied History actually. 😅 If the Legends was True, I find it Extremely Hardcore especially for the Founder to just pour away an Entire Day's Pot of BKT Broth into a River just like that. 🌊😅
Anyway that's my Personal Opinion of this Place. 🤔 Don't let my Average Score deter you from this Place. It was Crowned "Malaysia King of BKT" back in 2006 afterall so I'm sure they have their Fans. 👑🇲🇾 Tomorrow, I will feature their Branch in Taman Sentosa 老字号木清肉骨茶 Restoran Crystal run by another Relative. 🤔 Don't hold your breath for it though, because I'll spoil it for you as the Taste is also 多多少少 roughly the same. 🤔

Have you tried the Original Bak Cheng BKT when the Original Founder was still around? 🤔 Did you witness him tossing away that Pot of BKT Broth? 🌊😅 Do share with us in the Comments Section Below!
