Protip: This Food Stall is not found on Grab's Map when I tried to search. 🤔 Instead, I would recommend to search for "Medan Selera Taman Eng Ann" instead.
This is a Famous Food Stall that is located in the Taman Eng Ann Medan Selera (Food Court) in Klang. Again, Credits to Felicia Mei Yee Hua from my Former FB Group for recommending this Place. 👍 This Medan Selera (Hawker Centre) itself has a Very Interesting Long Design. While this Food Stall was open, most of the other Stalls were Closed when I was there at 4.00pm on a Thursday so this Hawker Centre probably caters more for Breakfast or Lunch Crowds. 🤔

The Actual Food Stall is located at a Far Corner and you will definitely not miss it because takes up a Noticeably Large Lot. 🤔 It seems that alot of Celebrities have visited this place before, even Famous Celebrity Chef Martin Yan from "Yan Can Cook". 😳 The Owner is actually a Polite and Friendly Photogenic Young Lad as you can see. 📷😄
Although there were not alot of Customers when I was there, I still observed Brisk Business with Customers regularly coming and going. 👍 It didn't take too long for mine to be served up. I would say around 2 Mins?

Popiah RM3.00 each. (1 Non-Spicy, 1 Spicy)
This is the Classic Hawker Center / Kopitiam styled of 手工 Handmade Popiah. What I am impressed with is How Large they are. 👍 Each of them are cut in 4 Sections. Compared to some of the Truly Mini Sized Ones I've had in JB, 😅 these were Huge. I would say they might even be Slightly Larger then the Standard Ones sold in Singapore. 🤔 Doesn't give me any impression that they are trying to Scrimp on Ingredients. Nice. 👍

Taste Quality of the Popiah (Non-Spicy and Spicy)
When I popped this in my Mouth, the 1st thing I could taste was a Very Full Shot of Mangguang Juiciness. 💦😋 This is closely followed by a Meaty Presence and Sweetness. 🍖 The Sweetness isn't from Kicap Manis Black Sauce but rather from Lup Cheong.
Really Juicy Popiah, the Whole Thing just 满口爆汁 in my Mouth. 💥💦 Not only that, there is a Nice Crispiness within that gave it a Slight Crunchy Texture. Shiok! 😋 The Spicy Version is also Not Very Spicy. In fact I thought the Spiciness is Extremely Mild. 🌶️ Its more like a Sambal Tease than anything. 😅 Because its so Mild, I couldn't really taste the Quality of the Sambal but its not bad lah.

Dissecting the Popiah, I can see its made up of:
Popiah Skin
Shredded Mangguang
Shredded Cucumber
Lup Cheong
Bits of Egg
Something Crispy that I can't tell what it is.

Popiah Skin
Personally I feel there Nothing Special about this. 🤔 Its not Super Thin Thin type, and even abit Doughy. 🤔 Decent and Standard Tasting, it tastes like any Regular Popiah Skin out there.
Shredded Mangguang
The Main Component of a Popiah, this was Soft and Soaked in a Nice Sweetish Broth 🍲 that's also not Overly Sweet. You know when people make Popiah they tend to squeeze out the Juice to make it easier to wrap? 💦🤔 I feel not as much Juice is squeezed out and it retains much of it for this one.
Lup Cheong
This was a Very Important Component in this Popiah I feel because the Amount given is Generous, 👍 it delivers a Noticeable Meatiness. 🍖😋 I also like that instead of using Black Sauce Zhup, this Lup Cheong doubles its Duty in providing the Sweetness that this Popiah requires. 👍
Pork Lard Crisp
Actually, I'm also not sure if its indeed Pork Lard Crisp they used here 😅 but next to the Lup Cheong, it was the Next Important Component because it delivered the Crunchy Texture that this Popiah needs so its not just Soft Soft all the way. 😋
Cucumber Slices
Another regular ingredient you'd see in Popiah. I couldn't taste this, but I wonder if their inclusion is to subtlely temper the Meatiness of the Lup Cheong? 🤔 I suppose its inclusion also added a Layer of Colour to the Popiah.
Bits of Egg
Actually on Closer Inspection, this is actually Tofu rather than Egg. 😳 Smart Move to use this because using Tofu can help cut cost instead of actually using Egg, and yet retain a Similar Bite Texture and Appearance. 👍 Even I thought it was Egg when I first saw it. 😳

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At the Price of RM3.00 (S$1.00) each for the Popiah, these were absolutely worth the Money. 💵👍 Compared to JB styled of Very Obviously Stingy, Trying to Scrimp Mini type of Popiahs, 😅 the ones here were Big Fat and Juicy. 😋 Heck I think they may even be Slightly Larger than SG versions. 🤔 Nowhere did it cross my mind that the Stall Owner is trying to Scrimp or be Stingy. 料给的大方, 吃得也爽. 👍
The Generous Amount of Ingredients translates directly to the Dish itself. 👍 Especially the Generous Amount of Lup Cheong which really added alot to the Dish with its Meaty Sweetness without relying too much on using Sweet Black Zhup. 🍖😋 The Soul of the this Popiah is really how Every Ingredient worked together. ♥️ I really love the Meaty Juicy Burst of Flavour in my Mouth as I bite into this. Really is 满口爆汁. 💥💦 Shiokness.
That said, I also loved how Clever they substituted Egg with Tofu obviously to try to cut cost but it still works because this Substitution doesn't take away the Overall Taste for me. 👍Everything about the Design of this Popiah impressed me Culinarily because of how clever they are able to make all the Ingredients work and even scrimp without letting Customers feel any Perceived Stinginess. 👍 Smart.
I now understand why this Popiah is so Popular and the Main Reason is that it doesn't feel Stingy. 👍 At the Price they are asking for each Popiah, I feel its Very Reasonable and 合理. This is really not easy to do given today's challenging economic climate where everything also 起价. 💵😅 I have no issues with this Food Stall. This Popiah is Culinary Impressive on its Clever Use of Ingredients, 👍 its Value for Money and I love its Delicious 爆汁口感. 💥💦 This Stall is worth the money to try.
Having said that, if you would like to come here, I would recommend to visit either in the Morning or Lunch where the other Food Stalls are also open. 🤔 I'm sure there are also other Good Stuffs to eat in this Medan Selera Hawker Centre to pair with this Popiah. 😋

Hi Ryan, RM3 popiah very cheap cos prepare popiah a lot of work. This popiah look very nice. Hard to get nice popiah cos either not nice or they very stringy with the ingredients. So far in JB, I like the popiah from 321 cafe at Senibong Cove. Long ago during the 80's the hawker stalls at Jalan Segget JB got one lansi stall, his popiah is nice lah but his arrogrant and lansi attitute see also lost appetite. Really KNS type, and he like to sieve the turnip for several minutes for every piece of popiah. I see also my blood pressure go up, hahahaha....Don't know what he want to sieve and shake so long for what. After that put on popiah skin still want to arrange the ingredients left, right, left, right. After tried 2 times I stop eating, cannot tahan see him wrap the popiah like kids playing masak masak. After that found 1 Malay lady at Taman Pelangi, she sell chinese style popiah, very nice. Long time didn't go, not sure if she still selling. One of this day must go have a look if she still there. The Malacca bunga Raya popiah with pork lard RM7 actually not really nice but people so crazy queue for it. Their food truck will travel JB and KL area, every week different location. Their popiah skin not nice, after eat very jelak.
ReplyDeletehahaha always good to hear such Culinary Adventures from you! 😄 Thanks for the headsup, adding them to future places for me to visit! 😄 i'll be honest i've never had the chance to eat pork lard with Popiah in Singapore so it really is a treat to enjoy them in Malaysia 😋 hahaha so cute hear the way u describe how that person wrap.
