What is a Japanese Yatai 屋台?

According to Wikipedia, a "Yatai 屋台" is a Small Japanese Mobile Food Stall 🇯🇵⛩️ typically selling Ramen or other Foods not unlike a Pasar Malam Stall that we have. 🤔 The Main Difference is that Customers are able to Dine-In directly at the Stall and facing the Chef. 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳
Due to our Warm and Humid Tropical Weather in South-East Asia, 🌞🥵 Outdoor Yatais like these are of course not commonly seen.

Description about this Yatai Eatery

Note: Google Maps states that this Place starts at 6.30pm, but they are actually open for Business at 6.00pm. I liked that this place smartly choose to open for Business only in the Evenings and even provide some Portable Standing Fans for a More Cooling Experience. 🌬️😌 Its also located near a Lake which really adds alot to the Atmosphere of the Place.

There are a Total of Only 8 Seats and because this gets filled up quickly, I would recommend to come here early to avoid disappointments especially if you are coming as a Group. 👍 I've checked with them and they are in the Midst of Planning to get more Tables and Seats in the Future. 👍

Staffed by 3 Young Malaysian Chinese Youths, the Main Chef 👨‍🍳 is a Very Friendly Chinese Lad with 2 Young Lady Assistants. According to them, they only started the Business quite recently on 10 July 2025.

They offer 2 Versions of Ramen 🍜 (Shoyu or Spicy Miso) with 3 Different Sizes and a Couple of Appetizers 小吃 as you can see in the Menu. 🍤 Anyway it took about 7 Mins for the Dish to be served up. And because its a Yatai, you will be able to see the Young Chef cook the Dish right in front of you. 🔥👨‍🍳 Hahaha just like how Yatais are being portrayed in J-Dramas and Anime, 还真的是做的有模有样. 😅

🍜 Shoyu Ramen (Basic) = RM18.90

Decently Plated, it looked like a Big Bowl despite it being their Most Basic Set. 🍜👍
There is a Lovely Delicious Fragrant Aroma of Pork Cha Shu wafting from it. 🐷😋

The Dish itself consists of:
🍜 Decent Amount of Ramen Noodles
🐷 2 Slices of Pork Char Shu
🎍 6 Pieces of Bamboo Shoots
🥬 Some Spinach
🥬 2 Slices of Nori Seaweed.

🍲 Quality of the Soup Broth

For Ramen Connoisseurs, the Broth they have here is a Chicken Broth, 🐔 not Traditional Pork Tonkotsu.
🐷 Despite that, I thought it was still Decent in Taste with quite a Gao Gao Boiled Chicken Essence. 👍
Amount of Shoyu is Prominent although I found it being abit Much, 🤔 making the Dish a Tad Elevated Salty compared to other Shoyu Ramen I've eaten. 🍜🤔

I'll be honest, this is Not Mind-Blowingly Amazing compared to some Restoran Level of Ramen Soup Broth. 🍲 But there is Decent Effort and Work done to it that also doesn't taste like they added alot of MSG. 👍 According to the Friendly Chef, this Broth was boiled for 4 Hours which I believe because 吃得出来 this doesn't taste Low Effort or Cheaply Made. 👍

If there are further issues I have with it, I thought it was a Tad Oily most likely due to boiling Chicken Skins along with it. 🐔🤔 That and also the Elevated Level of Shoyu Saltiness as I mentioned. If you have a Habit of drinking a Ramen Broth Dry, I wouldn't recommend to do it for this one. 🙅‍♂️

🍜 Quality of the Noodles

Amount of Noodles were Acceptable for the Price. 👍 Uses Correct Ramen-Styled Noodles, not Regular Noodles. Not Super QQ but Slight Firmish. Unlike other Customers who eat this Very Very Yiu Siu Quietly and Daintily, 😌 I heck care and just slurped noisily just like how you're supposed to enjoy Ramen. 🍜😋 Super Shiok! ❤️

Cultural Protip: Noisily Slurping Ramen is a Perfectly Acceptable Behaviour when it comes to eating Japanese Ramen. In fact in Japanese Culture, Slurping Noodles Noisily is actually a Sign of Appreciation as this tells the Chef how much you're actually enjoying the Meal.
🍜😋 This applies even when you're Outside of Japan so go ahead and Slurp Away if you enjoyed the Meal! 👍

🐷 Quality of the Pork Cha Shu Slices

2 Slices were given and they were on the Smaller Size compared to the Larger Ones that you would normally see in a Traditional Bowl of Ramen. 🐷🤔 I did like that they take the Effort to Torch and Charr the Slices abit nevertheless. 🔥🐷
That said, as soon as this thing entered my Mouth, my Brain Stopped Working....THIS CHAR SHU LITERALLY MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH!!! OMGGG 🐷🤯

Not only the Creamy Fatty Section but even the Meat, EVERYTHING just 入口即化 dissolves in my Mouth ❤️ and I was immediately slammed with an Intense Porky Jelakness in my Brain. 🐷🤯 Pigginess is Strong but its Not Unpleasant. Its So Very Meaty Fatty and Savoury. OMG so Good! ❤️

🎍🥬 Quality of the Bamboo Shoots and Spinach

Nothing Particularly Special about these, they provided the Veggie Component of the Dish. 🥬 Bamboo Shoots were Tender with No 臭臭 Taste, 👍 and Veggies were Clean Tasting and Crunchy. 👍
Everything worked well together and it just took me Mere Minutes to Slurp up Everything. 🍜😋 Ohhhhhh 一句话: 爽! ❤️

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

At the Price of RM18.90 (S$5.90) for their Basic Set, this isn't Super Cheap but I still feel it is Worth the Money. 👍 This isn't a High-End Japanese Restoran Quality, 🤔 but neither does it taste like those Typical Food Court type of Faux Ramen. 😅 That said, I'm no Ramen Connoisseur myself and my level of Good Ramen was "Hokkaido Ramen Santouka" in Singapore Clarke Quay which has unfortunately closed down. 😞

Anyway back to the Review, the Soup Broth while Not Tonkotsu but a Chicken Broth still tasted like there is Work being done to it. 🍲👍 The Chicken Essence is Gao Gao. 🐔 The Only Issues I have with it was that it was a Tad Salty and a Tad Oily. 🤔 Other than that, this is not some Cheap Low Effort Soup. I appreciate the Culinarily Effort that has gone into this Bowl of Ramen. 吃得出有用心做. 👍

And even if 用心 is not something you bother with, 😅 the Insane 入口即化 Literal Melt in Mouth Pork Char Shu was an Absolute Banger! 🐷🤯 To be able to make Char Shu to this level definitely needs Alot of Work. 👍 Having said that the Jelak Porkiness released in this is Intense! 🐷🤯

Damn Delicious but this Sudden Smack of Pigginess can be Very Jelak. For me, the Default 2 Pieces of this was really quite enough already.
😅 Hahaha I dare anyone to order more as Add-Ons!
😅

Why did this Place earn my Highest Top Score?

Simple. It was the Friendly Main Chef himself. 👨‍🍳👍 He was a Really Jovial Friendly Chap and it was an Absolute Delight to engage with him in Conversation while I ate. 👨‍🍳😄 His Friendly Chattiness suits this Yatai Concept Very Well where the Whole Idea is for the Chef to interact Face to Face with Customers. 👨‍🍳 He understood the Core Reason of a Japanese Yatai. 👍 To be fair, not all Yatai Chefs are the Chatty type, but it does enhance the Dining Experience if the Chef is Friendly and Chit-Chats. 👍

Through my Interactions with him, I can tell he is really Passionate about Culinary. It really added alot to the Dining Experience. 👍 Our Chit-Chat even got some of the other Customers to join in and suddenly the Whole Atmosphere had a Warm Community Feel that is Unique to Japanese Yatais like this. ❤️ This is not something you can experience in a Regular Conventional Dine-In Restoran. 👍

Protip: If you can, come Later in the Evening after the Sun has Set (Around 8.00pm to 9.00pm?) This is the time when they turn on the Lights. As you can see in the Photo, it looks even more Beautiful and adds even more to the Dining Atmosphere. ❤️ Although you do risk not being able to get a Seat to dine in if its Crowded.

At the End of the Day, this isn't a Michelin Rated Super Mind-Blowing Must Eat Ramen, 🍜 but it definitely was made with Effort. ❤️ At the Very Least, this is Not a Ramen that can be Easily Replicated at Home. 👍

Decent Tasting Ramen aside, the Most Unique Aspect about this Place is really the Face-to-Face Yatai Feel. 😄 Truly a Joy to enjoy such a Community Feel where Strangers meet and enjoy a Jolly Good Time together. ❤️ Even if you are the More Introverted Non-Chatty type, I'm sure you will also enjoy your time at this Very Adorable, One of a Kind Eatery! 😄
Don't Miss Out this Truly Unique Hidden Gem right here in Taman Mount Austin! 🇯🇵⛩️❤️
