For this Review, I'm going to try out a New Review Format where I closely Dissect and Analyze about a Place from a Recommendation. 😅 And of course because Amelia has been so Helpful with her Recommendations, She will be the Star of the Show here where I will take Reference from. 👍 This is a Laksa that she herself personally boycotted. 🍜🤔
Her Exact Comment was:
"Don't go Ang Laksa, I boycott already. Expensive, liaw and soup so pathetic. Siham 5 mini size only. After take the taugeh & noodles he will look 2nd time then pinch back a few strands, very bad habit. The last I went, I told him off that his taugeh & bee Hoon is ceiling price."
Pretty Damning. 🤔 So of course I was excited to give this a try! 😅
Lets explore together and closely dissect how this Place actually is.
The Actual Location is called "Restoran Chen Yee." If you were to use Grab, don't use "Restoran Ang" because interestingly it will bring up another Non-Related "Restoran Ang" located in Johor Jaya instead. 🚗 The Eatery itself is a Rather Large Non-Airconditioned Place that looks like it has been around for Many Years. 🤔 Run by what looks like a Small Family, the Elder Man is the Main Cook and there is a Younger Lad (probably his Son?) in charge of Serving and Cashier Duties.

No Issues with the Customer Service, they were Polite but also Reserved and mostly kept to themselves. What I'm impressed was that there are actually quite alot of Customers within even at 8.00am on a Weekday Morning. Quite a Popular Place. 👍 Anyway it took 3 MIns for the Kopi-O-Kosong and 7 Mins for the Laksa. Everything was served up within 7 Mins. Not Bad Timing considering the Elevated Level of Customers when I was there. 👍
☕ Kopi-O-Kosong = RM2.20
The Kopi itself has a Noticeable Bitter Note. ☕ Not Very Gao Gao type but also Not Dilluted. Definitely will wake you up although Not Overly Strong type.
This Laksa consists of:
🦪 5 Very Small Sihum
🟧 1 Oblong Taupok (Cut in Half)
🍡 2 Small Fishballs
🥟 2 Crispy Wantons
🥬 Some Taugeh

Alright lets Closely Dissect and De-Construct Amelia's Comment in Sections while we do this Review. 🤔
"Expensive, liaw and soup so pathetic. Siham 5 mini size only."
Its True that there are 5 Very Small Sihum given. 🦪🤔 However, Amount of Liaw and Soup I would say is Very Subjective. Personally, from the Amount given for the Price of RM9.00 I feel is Reasonable given Today's Economic Climate. 💵🤔
Maybe they used to give more Liaw in the Past? I'm not sure. 🤔 Anyway this is my Perspective as an Outsider 外人 for eating this for the Very First Time.

"After take the taugeh & noodles he will look 2nd time then pinch back a few strands, very bad habit."
As I did not specifically closely observe his cooking, I am unable to comment on this. 😅 Although not a Very 大方 Action to do, personally I feel its quite normal for Stall Owners to scrimp by pinching back a few strands. 🤔 Heck many Singaporean Eatery Owners do this all the time that we are Numb to such Actions already. 😅
Its Unfortunate that such Scrimping Actions happen, but that's the Sad Reality of needing to do Cost Cutting to survive in Today's Cruel Economic Climate. 💵🫤 I personally won't judge this Too Harshly unless its really Stingy and Scrimp until 太离谱 jitao only give 1 Strand of Taugeh lah. 😅
"The last I went, I told him off that his taugeh & bee Hoon is ceiling price."
Again relating to price. 💵🤔 I'm assuming the "Ceiling Price" she's referring to probably means "Very Expensive 天价". 💵🤔 Again as an Outsider 外人, I am unable to comment on this. Personally, I feel that the Asking Price of Sub-RM10.00 feels quite ok considering that an Average Price of a Regular Meal in JB is at least RM10.00 and above. 🤔 So to find a RM9.00 Dish is actually quite Commendable. But again, this is just my Opinion as an Outsider.
So how does the Actual Dish taste like?
🍯 The Provided Black Sauce Condiment
This is not a Chilli, but rather some sort of Bak Chor? 🤔 Very Mildly Spicy, its more like White Pepper sort of Spiciness.
Bits of Bak Chor mixed with some Haebee. Slightly Salty with an Earthy Tone. Decent Tasting Condiment that I can see should pair well with Laksa. 😋
🍲 Quality of the Laksa Broth
Not Super Gao Gao Lemak, but still Lemak. 🥥 Texture is Watery with No Grittiness, No Lemongrass. Interestingly I tasted a Slight Note of Sihum Seafoodiness within. 🦪🤔 This Seafoody is Very Faint and I had to drink a few more times but its definitely there as a Faint Aftertaste.
Spiciness is Mild and lingers as a Gentle Heat on your Throat. 🌶️ Very Decent Standard Lemak type of Laksa Gravy that is not Dissimilar to SG type of Non-Katong type of Laksa. 🤔The Noodles were certainly from a Package and they were Boiled Soft. Amount of Noodles given feels reasonable for the Price. 🍜👍

I won't go in-depth to describe all the Other Ingredients within the Bowl. They taste exactly how you would imagine them to taste. 🍜🤔 Without that Black Sauce Condiment, this tasted like a Decent Not Overly Lemak type of Standard Laksa. 👍 After it is mixed in, the Dish takes on a Slightly Earthier Tone without drastically changing too much of its Base Taste Profile.

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At the Price of RM2.20 (S$0.70) This was a Decent Kopi with a Noticeable Bitter Note. Not Very Gao Gao type but also Not Dilluted. 👍 Definitely will wake you up although Not Overly Strong type of Kopi.
At the Price of RM9.00 (S$2.80) was an Acceptable Price for this Laksa. 🍜👍 It was a Not Very Gao Gao Lemak type of Laksa but still tasted Acceptably Lemak enough and pretty close in taste to SG Non-Katong Type of Laksa. 🥥😋 If you enjoy Conventional Laksa, you will most likely have no issues with this. 👍

Overall no issues with Everything Else. Although not a Place I would specifically come to JB for, I also feel there is no need to drastic until must Boycott. 🍜🤔 Don't let my Average Score deter you from this Place. If you are near the Area craving for some Classic Familiar Tasting Laksa, I can still recommend this to give it a try.
Interesting Review Format huh? 😅 Hahaha. Once again, thanks to Amelia for all her Recommendations which is Very Much Appreciated. 👍 We may not agree 100% on Everything as Everyone's Taste is Different in how we approach a Dish. 👍
Tune in Tomorrow where I will showcase Ah Yong Laksa (Pasar Kia Laksa) 🍜 located relatively nearby that Amelia herself recommended. Let's do a Comparison of Both to see! 😄
