During the course of my Research on Kulai Eateries, I came across this place that is apparently quite popular for their WTMs so I thought I'd give it a go.
The Actual Place is a Non-Airconditioned Eatery located among a Row of Shophouses.
Indeed Popular, the Place was quite crowded with Locals even on a Weekday as you can see.

I am especially appreciative with the Friendly Lad who reached out to me with a Very Welcoming Demeanor.
I haven't even taken my Seat and already this was a Very Nice and Welcoming First Customer Impression.
According to him, this place has been around for about 15 Years already. Anyway it took 1 Min for the Herbal Tea, 4 Mins for the Fried Wantons and 11 Mins for the WTM. Pretty Decent Timing for the Elevated Level of Customers.

Herbal Tea (Hot, Less Sweet) = RM2.60
Served in a Standard Beverage Cup, its not really a Hot Drink, more like Slightly Warm. Although Dark in Colour, this isn't Monkfruit as I first imagined, but taste more like Barley. Quite Decent Tasting actually and doesn't taste Diluted. It also doesn't taste like its taken from some Can and I think its actually Homebrewed.
Less Sweet is still quite Sweet though. As this isn't Monkfruit, I'm not sure if this will spike so if you are watching your Blood Sugar, you might want to take note.

311 Spicy Fried Wanton (5 pieces) = RM6.00
Served in an Adorable Plastic Boat Plate with a Small Dollop Side of Mayo and Chilli.
The Mayo certainly tastes like its from some Supermarket with a Very Standard Mayo Creamy Profile.
Same with the Chilli, probably also from some Bottle, it tasted Sweetish but it also isn't like those Sweet Chilli you'd get from a Typical Fast Food Outlet. Very Mildly Spicy that I think even Children should be ok with this.

The Fried Wantons themselves have some Chilli Specks on them. Freshly Fried with a Delightful Crispy Skin and a Light 油香味 that is also Not Overly Oily. I liked that as soon as I bite into this, the Chilli Flakes immediately got to work on my Tongue. The Spiciness starts slow, but gradually intensifies. Its never strong until bite your tongue, but maintains a Gentle Heat.
I also like the Quick Saltish Hit of the Pork Filling. Interestingly it has a More Bouncy Meatball Texture. Overall a Decent Quality Fried Wanton. Adding the Mayo and Chilli is fine, but I feel the Fried Wanton is Decent Tasting even when eaten on its own.

200 Dry Wanton Noodles (Small, Wanton Mee, Black with Chilli) = RM8.50
I thought this was a Visually Pleasant Presentation.
I am Decently Impressed with the Amount of Noodles served with a Small Bowl of Soup with 4 Wantons.
Quality of the SoupDecently Light Tasting and Not Overly Salty. Taste like a Light Fishball Soup with a Slight Hint of Fishiness.
It doesn't taste like MSG is used. Pretty Decent Tasting Light and Drinkable WTM Soup.

Quality of the Wantons
There are 4 of them in the Soup. Soft and Smooth Skin with a Tender Firmish Bite. I thought the amount of Pork Filling within felt larger than usual for a Wanton of this type. Not Overly Porky, also Not Peppery, I also tasted a Hint of Prawn. This was a Pretty Decent Tasting Wanton.

Quality of the Char Siew
There are about 8 Slices provided. Although not the Legit Roasted Type, they are also not the Dry Dry type.
Sweetish, Meaty and Not Overly Porky.

Quality of the Noodles
Bouncy and QQ to the Bite, these were Nicely Al Dente. Even though I ordered the Black Version with Chilli, I thought the Main Taste Profile of the Sauce has a Flat Sweetness, not those Very Earthy Robust Type.
Chilli was also Not Very Spicy at all. Such a Pity this had such a Good Bouncy Noodle but the Sauces felt a Tad Weak. This WTM needs Green Chilli to elevate it with a Sourish Kick.
Quality of the VeggieI don't usually comment about the Veggie because this is usually a Very Calefare Item, and I don't know why but for some reason I thought this had a Nice Fresh Veggieness to it. Not just a Simple Garnish for this Dish.

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At the Price of RM2.60 (S$0.90) for this Cup of Herbal Tea was Affordable although I cannot discern what Herbal this is.
Visually it looks like its made out of Monkfruit but the Taste is actually Barley. It does taste Homebrewed and Decent Tasting that also doesn't taste Dilluted.
At the Price of RM6.00 (S$2.00) for the Plate of 5 Pieces of Fried Wantons was also Decent Tasting.
I liked the Spicy Chilli Flakes sprinkled on it that maintains a Nice Gentle Spicy Heat that never bites. If you are looking to add a Side Munchie, this is not bad.
At the Price of RM8.50 (S$2.80), this is a Very Bouncy QQ Al Dente Noodles that was Delightful to Munch.
Having said that, I feel the Sauces used felt a Tad Weak. To be fair, there is Nothing Wrong with this Sauce and it would probably not be an Issue for Most People. But because of how Bouncy this Noodle was, I thought they could push this Sauce abit further by making it a Tad More Robust.

Overall, I do like this place and I can totally understand why this Eatery is Popular in Kulai as you can see from how Popular this Place is with the Locals even on a Weekday.
I especially appreciate how Friendly and Welcoming the Young Lad was that instantly made me feel very happy eating here. This was a Good 1st Customer Experience that More Eateries should adopt.
If you are looking for a Decent WTM in Kulai, I can definitely recommend to give this a try if you are ok with a Less Robust Tasting WTM Sauce with some Delightful QQ Bouncy Noodles.

Hi Ryan, this old school WTM look good, long time never see WTM put"chye sim"菜心. Even thou expensive not that they put alot. Now adays hawkers very calculative. I still prefer chye sim in WTM, but in JB mostly use 小白菜, those from Cameron Highland not nice, very rubbery texture. Look like you already covered 3/4 of Kulai eatery. hihihihi.... I yet to explore any food in Kulai except 大树下擂茶.
ReplyDeletehey hey, oh its chye sim? hahaha i'm so bad at differentiating ingredients 😅 regardless, it tasted so fresh and clean despite being just a side veg for some reason. 😋 oh i haven't had 大树下擂茶, i understand its famous too. the Leicha i had was Volcano and Man Ting Fong which i'll of course post later. 👍 Tomorrow will be a Tze Char Place that is very popular on FB Groups as I noticed. 😁
DeleteI love Kulai. it is indeed a nice place, very chill relax and lots of good foods to explore ❤️ I don't know if i've mentioned before, but one of the first things i saw upon reaching was seeing an Elderly Lady chilling at her House's Cute Little Garden tending to some simple vegetables, and playing with a couple of her Pet Meows. ❤️ omg i'm so envious as I observed her such a chill relax vibe. ❤️ haizzz no way in a million years will we ever enjoy this in Singapore. 😭
