🍋🍜 3 in 1 Kway Teow Tng Special (Small) = RM6.50
🥤 1 Cup of Plain Hot Water = RM0.50

No Service Charge

So in Penang, there is 1 Unwritten Rule in their Eateries, and that is Customers MUST order at least a Drink with their Meal or there will be an Additional Charge. 🥤🤔 In Practice though, this Rule isn't strictly enforced, although sometimes you can sense abit of Dissatisfaction if you were to not order Drinks. 🤔 This applies not only in Penang but in JB too, although I do feel Penang Eateries show slightly more Dissatisfaction overall compared to JB. Just a Very Minor thing I observed. 🤔

This is actually Challenging for me because I go to Multiple Locations to eat on a Food Trip and if I were to drink from every place, it would be difficult to eat more. 🥤😅

Also, the Drinks sold are usually Sugary and not actually appropriate for my Diabetic Condition so there's that too.
🍬😅

This Kopitiam is the only one in Penang I encountered that actually enforces this "Must Buy Drink" Rule 🥤🤔 but herein was a Nice Thing they did. I was totally prepared to pay that Extra Charge and get nothing and they still gave me a Cup of Hot Water as a Goodwill Gesture. 🥤👍 I appreciated it and this is actually Not Bad Customer Service.

The Kopitiam itself looks like an Older Place here in Bayan Lepas.
It wasn't Crowded at all on a Tuesday Morning. 🌞 Not Airconditioned but still relatively Airy. 🌬️ The Main Reason I'm here though is because of this Stall that I found on Google Maps. 🌏

So apparently Lemon Kway Teow Tng 🍋🍜 is something that is supposedly quite common in Malaysia although I have never tasted in during my JB Travels. 🤔 The Whole Concept of eating something as Savoury as a Kway Teow Tng with something as Sourish and Fruity as a Lemon baffles me. 🍋🤔 What is with this Combination? Won't it taste too Wierd? Is this 黑暗料理??

The Stall is run by what looks like a Mother and Son Team. 💁👨 The Lady is the Main Cook and she is a Very Friendly and Jolly Person. 😄 Despite the name, you don't have to choose only Kway Teow if you prefer other Noodles. I ordered Kway Teow because why not. The Dish was served up quickly in 4 Mins.

🍋🍜 3 in 1 Kway Teow Tng Special (Small) = RM6.50

The Red Chilli is Belacan Chilli. 🌶️ Woo! No Joke, this is a Strong and Robust Chilli that will Bite your Tongue and Linger there. 🔥🌶️

The Other Condiment is just a Standard Light Soy Sauce with Slices of Green Chilli Padi. I was recommended to Mix their Red Chilli into the Dish when Consuming. 🌶️

The Dish looks so Adorable and Unusual with 2 Wedges of Lemon in it! 🍋😅 The Soup Broth does have a Noticeable Lemony Smell and with a Touch of Lemony Taste. 🍋🍲 This Lemon Taste is Not Over Light, yet is Not Overly Lemony. 不多不少就是刚刚好! 🍋😋 Imagine a Kway Teow Tng with a Tinge of Lemony Slightly Sourish Freshness. Nice and Comforting and Not at all Wierd Tasting! 😋

Fishballs are Relatively Big and Soft with a Juicy Bite. 🍡😋 It is Noticeably Sweetish in Taste and Definitely Tastes Handmade. The Fishcake Slices were ok, nothing special. Bittergourd are Thinly Sliced, Very Soft to the Bite and Completely Not Bitter at all. 🥒

Bak Chor was Fat, Juicy, Lightly Salted and Surprisingly Light Tasting, Not at all Porky or 重口味 at all. 🐷👍 Kway Teow themselves were Soft and Silky, easily slides down my Throat although I feel these are probably from a Package. 🍜 I love the Runny Egg used here as it brings a Delightful Layer of Eggy Creaminess. 🍳 The Dish is then Topped off with a Few Pieces of Fried Pork Lard. 🐷😋

Before adding the Red Belacan Chilli

Eating Everything without the Belacan Chilli is Nice because the Slight Acidity and Sourish Tease of the Lemon 🍋 really comes thru and elevates this dish to another level that i have never thought can happen for a Kway Teow Soup. 👍

After adding the Red Belacan Chilli

Adding the Red Belacan Chilli did not destroy the Dish. 👍 In fact I thought it visually transformed into a Reddish Look and became almost like a Laksa because of the Sourishness from the Lemon now with an Additional Spicy Heat from the Belacan! 🍋🌶️

My Recommendation:

Don't add the Red Belacan first. 🌶️🤔 Taste the Dish without it because I feel this is the time when you will Fully Appreciate the Lemon which is the Main Actor here. 🍋👍 If you enjoy the Dish like this, eat Half of it then only add the Red Belacan to the 2nd half for a New Taste. 🌶️😋 In this 2nd Form, the Lemon takes a Less Active Role and it almost becomes like you're eating Laksa. Eating like this is like eating 2 Dishes in 1! 🍜😅

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

At the Price of RM6.50 (S$2.00) for this is Absolutely Worth the Money simply because of how Well Executed this was done. 🍜👍 Now that I think about it, using Lemon is actually a Very Smart Move because not only can it help Fight Away any Porkiness, 🐷 the Acidity within Lemon also shunbian helps with Marination of Meats. 🍋🍖 Its not 意思意思 put for Fun or Gimmicky, Lemon actually does serve an Important Purpose in this Dish. 🍋👍

The Lemon Soup Broth is really the Soul of the Dish. 🍋🍲 I am most impressed with how Beautifully Integrated the Lemon was incorporated into their Soup Broth. 👍 As Good and Useful as Lemon is, its also not an Easy Ingredient to use because too much of it, it will become Overly Sourish and Fruity and even become "苦" which can easily destroy the Dish. 🍋🤔 The Soup here really was 不多不少就是刚刚好! 😋

(Almost) Every Ingredient in here played an Important Role in elevating to the Dish. Though I'm still not convinced that the Fishcake needed to be there since they already have Fishballs. 🍡🤔 I reckon they're added only for Tradition Sake? 🤔 I can't believe this is just the Humble Kway Teow Tng. Add to it that I can enjoy 2 Different Tastes before and after adding that Red Belacan Chilli 🌶️ was the Icing on Top. All in all, for me, this is a Culinary Masterpiece. ♥️

The Stall Lady herself is Very Friendly and Jolly 💁 and according to her, they have been around for at least 13 Years already. 👍 Through Chit-Chatting and Discussing this Dish with her, I can feel that she is Very Passionate about Cooking. ♥️ In fact, she reminds me of Mdm Looi from
珍妈砂锅 Zhen Ma's Claypot in Kuching where I ate Sarawak Kacangma that I reviewed in the Past. If these 2 Ladies ever meet up, I can't imagine the Amazing Culinary 火花 they will ignite! 🎆 "Lemon Broth Kacangma" perhaps? 🍋🌿 #Mindblown 🤯

I have Absolutely No Issues recommending this to anyone who is here in Penang to give this a Try, especially if you have never had Lemon Kway Teow Tng before. 🍋🍜 I wonder if this Dish is Available in Singapore? Although even if there is, I highly doubt its gonna cost only S$2.00. 😅 Now I'm really intrigued. I will keep an eye out for this Dish when I explore JB! 😋
