New Lane Food Street

Address: Lorong Baru, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Google Map Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/YviUER9gYK8nB1VP7
Operating Hours: (According to Google Maps): Closed on Wednesday, Other Days (4.00pm to 11.00am)

New Lane Street is conveniently located just 5 Mins away from where I stayed in Penang. ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ Its a Food Street in a Corner thats lined with Rows of Food Stalls. Although Google Maps states that it opens at 4.00pm, I did see a few stalls open in the Afternoon at 2.00pm when I passed by the Area. ๐Ÿค” As it gets deeper in the Evening, it gets more and more Crowded. ๐ŸŒœ

The Most Prominent Stall in here seems to be a Charcoal Seafood Char Koay Teow which has the Longest Queue (looks like upwards of 30 mins). ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ˜ณ The Other Stalls are all very common stuffs like Curry Mee, Chee Cheong Fun, Hokkien Mee, etc.

This New Lane Food Street is Very Vibrant and Crowded with People as you can see. ๐ŸŽ‰ That said, I feel the Variety of Foods are Pretty Standard, there are No Particularly Special or Unusual Foods.

If you have the time to drop by in the Evenings, I do still recommend it because it really is Very Vibrant and ็ƒญ้—น. ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ˜„ Prices are agar agar pretty much Affordable and Reasonable. Not Touristy at all, it feels like even the Locals also come here to eat. Worth a Visit if you're here in Penang. ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ๐Ÿ‘

New Lane Street Apong Telur and Kuih Ketayap Stall

Apong Telur = 5 for RM4.50
Kuih Ketayap = 5 for RM5.00

Review Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (Average)

This Particular Stall I'm reviewing caught my eye because I've never heard of Apong Telur and Kuih Ketayap before.
Run by what looks like a Mother and Son Team, this Stall basically focuses on these 2 Kuihs.

As you can see in the Video, they have Multiple Mini Pans in front of them used to make the Kuihs which are like a Crepe Pancake. I love the way she swishes the Pan with Expert Flourish after pouring the Batter. Fast and Quick in 1 Motion. It was Mesmerizing to see her in Action!

Apong Telur = 5 for RM4.50

If you have eaten Apom Manis before, this is basically the Same Thing, except much Thinner and with no Sugar or Peanuts (although you can request to add them with extra cost). I reckon Apom Manis and this Apong Telur probably also uses the Same Type of Batter because they taste about the same to me. I don't really taste the "Telur" (Egg) in this.

I actually kindda like this. Imagine a Very Thin Crispy Crepe Pancake. Its Thin, Light and Fluffy with a Crispy Bite especially when Freshly Made. I would recommend to eat this on the spot immediately after you buy because it does get Cold fast. Personally, I feel the Plain Version that I bought is good enough, there is no need to add anymore fillings. It can be abit Dry to the Throat though.

Kuih Ketayap = 5 for RM5.00

This default comes Cold. It has a Very Wrinkly Appearance with Soft Chewy Dough and a Pandan Undertone. The Inner Filling is some Brown Coconut Shreds thats Mildly Sweet. This has a Very Similar Taste Profile as a Similar Type of Nonya Kuih. It tastes exactly how you'd imagine it to taste. If you like those Soft Soft type of Nonya Pandan Kuih with Bits of Coconut Shreds in the Filling, you will probably enjoy this one too.

Protip: If you Unwrap both the Apong Telur and Kuih Ketayap and Re-Wrap them together with the Coconut Shreds still in the Middle and Roll them Up, you will get a Nice Alternate Bite Texture where the Outer Skin is the Crispy Apong Telur, and followed by the Soft Pandan Coconut Shred taste of the Kuih Ketayap. Nice Combination, do give it a try if you have the chance.

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

At RM4.50 (S$1.40) for 5 Pieces of the Apong Telur, I feel this is Not Bad and Worth the Money if you enjoy eating such Pancake Crepes. I enjoyed it Plain, but you can eat it with whatever Fillings you want. Great as a Snack.

At RM5.00 (S$1.50) for 5 Pieces of the Kuih Ketayap, I feel this is also Worth the Money if you enjoy eating such Soft Soft Nonya Styled Kuihs. I also enjoyed this as a Snack.
Although not a Die Die Must Visit type of Stall, I feel these 2 Kuihs are quite enjoyable to eat especialy if you enjoy Kuihs. I reckon they would go great as a Dessert or to Dip into some Hot Coffee or Chocolate.
