Gurney Drive Hawker Centre 新關仔角小販中心

Address: 172, Solok Gurney 1, Pulau Tikus, 10250 Jelutong, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Google Map Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/zy58pcmWyza4qUmC7
Operating Hours: (According to Google Maps): Everyday (5.00pm to 12.00am)

Before I left for this Penang Trip, I posted a Photo of this I've taken from Klook. 📷 In the Photo, it looks like a Super Vibrant Place.

The Reality is that the Section in that Photo did not Open when I was there on a Monday. 😅 This makes for an Amusing "Expectations vs Reality" Meme as you can see.

According to a Friendly Local that I checked with, apparently this Hawker Centre has 2 Sections and some section are closed on Certain Days, 🤔 although he himself also wasn't sure which Day which Section is opened. 😅

I thought this was quite an Interesting Way to Operate a Hawker Centre. Even though its an Open-Air Hawker Centre, it can still feel Quite Hot and Stuffy especially if its not a Windy Day. 🥵

To be fair, the part of the Hawker Centre that was opened was still Very Vibrant and Crowded. 🎉 I could still find Seat as a Solo Diner a Monday Evening at 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Personally I feel the Best Time to come here is between 6.30pm to 7.30pm where its Crowded but you can still easily find seats. 👍

Although only Half the Hawker Centre was opened, there were still Plenty of Food Stalls available. 👍 This Place is not as Touristy as I thought and I saw Plenty of Locals. Food Prices are Affordable and Reasonable for a Hawker Centre.

Below are The Food Stalls that I visited:

No.61 Pasembur Stall

4 Random Pieces = RM13.00

Review Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (Recommended)

Pasembur is what Penang calls Indian Rojak. The Concept is Similar, just choose whatever you want from the Display, hand it over to the Stall Owner who will then process it and it will be served to you. There are a Few Key Differences between Pasembur and our Singapore Indian Rojak however:

1) After selecting the Items and handing them over, the Stall Owner WILL NOT Deep-Fry the Items. Instead, he will add alot of Cucumber Shreds before Lum the Pasembur Sauce all over.

2) Pasembur Sauce is Noticeably Less Sweet in Comparison to our Indian Rojak Sauce. They have a Similar Texture and Taste Profile though.

In my Opinion, I feel Pasembur is actually a Slightly Healthier Version that doesn't scrimp on Taste. Sure our Indian Rojak Pieces will taste Hotter and Crispier when Re-Fried, but this also makes it alot more Oilier and More Jelak to Eat. Although Pasembur Pieces are not as Crispy Hot because they're not Re-Fried, they are also not Cold either, just Room Temp.

I find that I can eat more of them and its Less Jelak in Comparison. The Pieces themselves don't taste any special, they taste exactly how you'd imagine them to taste. 4 Pieces may not seem like alot, but after adding the Sauce, I thought it was a Very Big Plate, more than enough for 1 person.

I also very much prefer this Less Sweet Pasembur Sauce. At least for this Stall, I feel the Sweetness is just right. Not as Overly Sweet as our SG Indian Rojak Sauce, but just enough Sweetness to make it taste Good. Hahaha at least I know my Blood Sugar won't shoot as High if I were to eat Pasembur!

I also like that Pasembur adds Cucumber Shreds instead of Onion Pieces which gives it a Mid-Meal Palette Cleanser. It was quite refreshing to actually munch on some of these Cucumber Shreds. I wish we have them here in our Singapore Version!

If you enjoy eating Indian Rojak, I highly recommend to give Penang Pasembur a try. I feel you will also enjoy this Less Fried, Less Sweet Version. To me, I feel THIS is the Best Version of Indian Rojak I've eaten by far.

At RM13.00 (S$3.90) for what I ordered, I feel this was a Reasonable Price because it really felt like a Very Big Plate despite only 4 Pieces. Of course, be sensible when ordering. Expect to pay more when you order Premium Items like Squid. For this Stall, I understand Squid cost RM20.00 per piece for this Stall. Also, Pasembur is available everywhere in Penang. You don't have to specifically come to this Stall to eat it.

No. 60 Popiah Stall

2 pieces of Popiah (1 Spicy, 1 Non-Spicy) = RM5.00

Review Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (Average)

This Stall is located right next to the Pasembur Stall and is run by an Friendly Lady. The Popiahs are quite small, but this Skin has a Unique Melt in Mouth Softness that I've not tasted before in other Popiahs I've eaten. Spiciness is Very Mild, it just brings a little bit of Heat, won't even bite your tongue. That said, I feel the Fillings within are just So So.

They have a Crumbly Feel, not the Very Mangguang Wet Wet type of Taste and taste pretty Average. Such a Pity because I really do enjoy the Very Melt in Mouth Popiah Skin at this Stall. Its the Meh Fillings that brought down the Score.
At RM5.00 (S$1.50) for 2 Pieces, I feel this is still an Acceptable Popiah to give a try if you have a Craving for Popiah although do keep your expectations in check.
No. 35 Wanton Mee Stall

WTM (Small) = RM7.00

Review Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (Average)

Although the WTM portion looks small, after mixing it up abit, I find that the Portion is actually acceptable for 1 person. Noodles are Bouncy although not the Super QQ type.
I find that it has a Very Light Taste despite being Drenched in Black Sauce.

Not very Salty, I find this quite close to tasting abit bland actually and I wish it was spicier. Char Siew didn't have much Porky Taste, Didn't taste any Special and was abit Chewy to the Bite. Wanton was nicely fried but I thought it was Too Doughy and I couldn't taste any Fillings.

At RM7.00 (S$2.10), it is affordable, but I don't feel this is worth the money because I felt it was Too Average and Bland for my Taste. Nothing really special about this WTM, and I feel you can save your money to try something else if you want to much on some Carbs.

No. 62 Drink Stall

Fresh Coconut Drink = RM6.00

Review Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (Average)

This was located right next to the Pasembur Stall. I was approached by one of their Roving Staffs so I thought I'd give it a try. I thought the Coconut was quite Big for its price. The Juice was Not Overly Sweet and also Not Plain. Pretty Refreshing and I liked it. One thing I thought was that it didn't have much Coconut Meat at all.

At RM6.00 (S$1.80), this was the Same Price as the Fresh Coconut I had back at
Restoran Triple Seven Three 7773 美食坊 (Kopitiam) in JB Bukit Indah. I reckon this is probably the Standard Price for a Fresh Coconut in Malaysia. Pretty Reasonable Price, its certainly Healthier than ordering Fizzy Drinks or Bubble Tea tbh.
