Chulia Street Hawker Food Street

Address: Chulia St, Georgetown, 10450 George Town, Penang, Malaysia
Google Map Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/uMUVjMyPP8VDCsP27
Operating Hours: (According to Google Maps): Closed on Monday, Other Days (4.30pm to 10.30am)

Compared to the other Food Streets I visited in Penang, I thought this Chulia Street was a tad smaller with not as much People. ๐Ÿค” That said, it could be because I arrived early at 5.00pm and it was slightly drizzling. ๐ŸŒง️
Nevertheless, there were still alot of Street Food Stalls lining the Street. This is the thing I like about Penang Food Streets ็พŽ้ฃŸ่ก—. ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ❤️ They FEEL Very Real, Very Rustic and Authentic. ๐Ÿ‘

Despite Smaller and Less Crowded than the other Food Streets I visited, it was still quite Vibrant and Popular. ๐ŸŽ‰ Not Touristy at all, it feels like even the Locals also come here to eat. Worth a Visit if you're here in Penang. ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ๐Ÿ‘

Chulia Street Wanton Mee

Wanton Mee (Small) = RM6.50

Review Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (Average)

I chose the Wanton Mee Stall because I've seen this featured in Various Blogs and Youtube Videos. ๐Ÿœ Apparently its opened for close to 50 Years with some even claiming that this is supposedly one of the Best Wanton Mee in Penang. The Word "Divine" is even being used to describe this. ๐Ÿค” It is also one of the 1st Stalls you will see as you enter Chulia Street.

Run by what looks like a Husband and Wife Team, the Middle Aged Man is the Main Cook of this Place. There are No Queues at around 6.15pm when I was there on a Friday Evening. From what I understand, it is currently being run by the Original Founder's Son. As you can see in the Video, he is quick, experienced and deft with his motions.

This is also one of the Sauciest WTM I've ever eaten so far. There is so much Sauce! The Black Sauce tastes Sweetish and has a Strong Alkaline Aftertaste. There is so much Sauce that it almost feels like a Soup.

Ingredients consists of both Fried and Steamed Baby Wantons, not the Huge HK Types. I thought the Fried Wanton was nothing special, it tasted more Doughy then Meaty. Steamed Wanton was also very Average, Skin is pretty Average, cannot really taste the Meat Fillings. There are some Fried Pork Lard Pieces and while I feel they contribute little to the Dish, it was nice to occasionally bite into one.

The Char Siew is Pretty Standard for a WTM and is Meaty with a Noticeable Sweetish Taste. Noodles felt slightly thicker than the Usual Mee Kia. Its not QQ but also not Nua Nua, just tastes Average. In fact, this Whole WTM has a Very Average Taste to it.

The Only Thing that distinguishes it from other WTM is how Saucy it is. Every Bite of this is like Slurping Sauce. This is a Decent if Average WTM in my opinion, certainly not something I'd describe as "Divine".

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

At the Price of RM6.50 (S$2.00), it is worth the Money, but I feel you are better off spending on something else. This Bowl of WTM tasted Average for me. Nothing in it Excited me at all. The Only Thing as I mentioned is that this is probably one of the Sauciest WTM i've ever eaten. So if you like a WTM with LOADS of Sauce, you will probably enjoy this more.

Even though this WTM did not wow me, I can still recommend to come visit this Chulia Street Hawker Food Street because there really are alot of Very Authentic, Very Affordable Food Stalls available. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of Hidden Gems just waiting to be discovered!
