This was a Surprisingly Large Eatery taking up 2 Huge Shop Lots in this Beletime Mall. Considering that the Mall is not exactly a Popular One, this was especially surprising. Despite having a Similar Name, this "Sister Seafood Soup" is not related to "大姐粿条汤 Sister Kuey Teow Soup" also in the Same Mall that I reviewed previously. At least I don't think so.

Not Particularly Crowded even on a Weekend, the Eatery has a Simple Clean Renovated Design. Taking a look at their Menu, they seem to sell everything from Morning Breakfast Items, Lunch Meals all the way to even Dinner Tze Char it seems. Really Bao Sua Bao Hai.
The Staffs are Polite and Mostly Reserved, but I don't know why, they seem to have this Urgent Anxious Look about them especially for a Young Chap that attended to me as I observed. Wierd Vibe. Maybe he's new? Anyway it took 7 Mins for the Coffee and 12 Mins for the Seafood Soup to be served up.

D02 白咖啡 - 无糖 White Coffee without Sugar (Hot) = RM4.00
Served in a Decent Standard Kopitiam Sized Cup, there were noticeably some Coffee Grounds floating on top. It also has a Milky Aroma and although not the Very Gao Gao Robust type. A Tad Diluted but still had some Coffee Strength.
Also doesn't taste its made from some 3 in 1 Sachet at least. There is a Unique Slight Bitter Note Tease in the Back of my Throat as I drank this. Not Amazing, but an Acceptable if a tad Diluted White Coffee.

001 一品鲜味汤 Signature Soup (No Noodles, No Rice) = RM30.00
Ordered this because this is stated as their Signature in the Menu and also there are some Google Reviewers that praised it.
The Dish is served in a Large Bowl, but compared to the Menu Photo, the Actual Dish don't look as Visually Impressive as you can see. Although to be fair, I requested for No Carbs, so perhaps thats why.
The Dish comes with:
6 Oysters of Various Sizes. Some Larger, Some Smaller
5 Small Pieces of Lala Shellfishes
1 Scallop with a Big Shell
2 Shell On Prawns
2 Small Rings of Sotong
About 1.5 tbsps of White Fish Meat
1 Small Cube of White Tofu
Quarter of a Tomato with Ginger and other Garnishings.

Quality of the Soup Broth
This is a Mostly Seaweed Based Seafood Broth. Saltish but not Overly So.
Doesn't taste like any MSG is used, or if its used its probably just a little.
The Seaweed Flavour is quite prominent in this one. I don't have much to complain about this Soup.
Its not Amazing, about Standard Kopitiam Level, but also nothing particularly wrong with it.

Quality of the Scallop
Quite Rare to see Scallop that is served with its Original Shell for a Seafood Soup although it is a Smaller One.
Taste Alright, there are No Foul Taste or Odours in this one.

Quality of the Oysters and Lala Shellfishes
The 6 Oysters are the same ones that are used in a Typical Fried Oyster Dish meaning they are probably a Frozen Supermarket Product. Taste alright though, Clean and No Sandy, Same with the Lala Shellfishes. No Sandy, No Slimy.

Quality of the Sotong
2 Rings of Sotong felt Stingy. They have a Rubbery Bite Texture, not firm and bouncy.
Taste like some Re-Thawed Frozen Supermarket Product.
Quality of the Fish Meat
No Idea what type of Fish is used. Meat Texture was Soft and Tender, not Firm. What is unique about them is this Sesame Oil Marination on them which I thought to be quite Clever as this will help kill any Potential Fishiness.
That said though, while I appreciate this effort in applying Sesame Oil Marination to the Fish, this also tells me that this Eatery is Not Confident on the Freshness of their Fish as this Technique is also used as a way to mask the Freshness.

Quality of the Prawns
Quite Large, and because they are Shell-On, Long Time Readers of this Food Blog will know that I will pay Extra Attention to this. Firstly, I don't see any effort or attempt in trimming of Barbs or even Feelers. Not a Major Issue but this is something I observed.

The Next Thing I observe closely in a Shell-On Prawn is of course whether the Digestive Tract is cleanly removed. This Prawn has a Unique Orange Muscle on the Top which I've not seen often in Prawns. Unfortunately, below this Orange Muscle, the Ugly Black Digestive Tract is not cleaned off.
These Observations so far from how there is No Effort in Trimming the Barbs or Feelers to the Digestive Tract not cleaned off tells me that there are Zero Effort in Processing the Prawns. This means they're just merely dumped into the Soup to be boiled. Thankfully the Meat of the Prawn is Firm, Juicy and Bouncy though not Nua Nua with a Nice Prawn Sweetness. So at least this Prawn is still somwhat Fresh tasting overall.

Nothing Special about the Rest of the Ingredients.
Personally I am surprised why only 1 Small Block of Tofu especially since Tofu isn't that Expensive an Ingredient.

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At the Price of RM4.00 (S$1.40) for this Coffee cannot say cheap.
While not a Bad Coffee, it also wasn't that Amazing and tasted a Tad Diluted. I don't feel it is worth it at the Price they're asking though.
At the Price of RM30.00 (S$9.80) for their Signature Seafood Soup, the List of Ingredient given looks impressive, but the Actual Amount given such as 2 Small Slices of Sotong, and especially 1 Small Block of Tofu felt Noticeably Stingy.

Despite being listed as their Signature, I personally feel the Dish itself didn't taste anything special and the Quality of the Soup Broth tasted like it was at most Singapore Kopitiam Level.
The Thing that really brought down the Score for me, was their Shell-On Prawns which I felt was Completely Zero Effort. Not only was there Zero Effort in Trimming of Barbs/Feelers, there was Zero Effort in even removing the Digestive Tract of the Prawn.

To be fair, Most Average Diners would probably be ok and not bother much with how this Prawn is being Processed (or lack thereof). But for a Signature Dish to cost RM30.00 and especially from a Culinary Point of View, I feel they could have done better.
If an Actual Michelin-Rated 海脚人 Hai Kah Lang (KL Taman Cheras) charge RM28.90 for their Signature Seafood Noodle Soup and shows me Actually Impressive Processing Effort for their Prawn, I fail to see why THIS Eatery in this Not so Popular Beletime Mall in JB Danga Bay should charge at a higher price at RM30.00 with this kind of Zero Effort. I'm sorry to be blunt like this, but it is what it is.

If I have a suggestion for this Eatery, if Cost is a Factor in Pricing, I reckon perhaps they can have LESS Variety of Ingredients by removing some Items, but provide more Quantity in return. It was quite revealing to see only 2 Miserable Rings of Sotong and only 1 Miserable Small Cube of Tofu. But this is just my Personal Opinion and Suggestion.
Don't get me wrong, while this Dish isn't anywhere close to Amazing, it was Not Completely Trash either. This is basically a Standard SG Kopitiam Level of Quality charging a Premium Price. I just wish there was abit more Culinary Effort to it to justify the Premium Price they are asking for.
What also lowered my score was the Wierd Vibe for me when I observed the Staffs all having this Urgent Anxious Look about them when I visited. Especially for the Young Lad that took my Order. Its not Bad Customer Service, but something just felt off that day. 感觉怪怪的 Wierd Indeed.

Hi Ryan, did you go to the beach behind Beletime to take photos? Recently they just started river cruise too. So far I only went to 936 kitchen & My coffee Beletime. Outside stalls behind the mall yet to try. Last went was like 2025, they have this pasar malam event behind the mall.
ReplyDeleteThis seafood soup doesn't look appetizing at all. Wah, they so ambitious 2 shoplots.
