When I was researching for places to eat in Stulang Laut in Google Maps, I came across this Very Unique Location. 🤔 Its actually located in Taman Pelangi, but is really very near to Taman Stulang Laut.

The Eatery itself is a Residential Landed House 住家 🏠 thats run by a Pair of Very Adorable Elderly Couple 👴🧓 who is selling their Homemade 水晶包 Crystal Dumplings. Really Rustic Place with a Very "Lived In Feel", when I arrived on a Saturday Morning. They have their Whole Entire Kitchen Setup right at the Courtyard. They really Cook and Make (almost) Everything here. 👍

The Name of this Shop "百年潮州水晶包" interestingly suggests that it has a 100 years History. 🤔 According to the Elder 大哥, apparently the Business was 1st started by his Father (or was it Grandfather? I can't remember) who originally came from China so this has at least a 100 years History so far.

The Elder 大姐 was the one manning the Front Counter. She was such a Jolly Friendly Lady that even when she was wearing a Mask, I could still "See" her Beautiful Smile. 😄 Her Husband, the Elder 大哥 is at the Back painstakingly individually wrapping all the 水晶包. Both of them were So Adorable working together like this! ❤️ I haven't even eaten the 水晶包 and already I can see the Amount of Hard Work and Effort that goes into each and every one of them. ❤️

There weren't much Customers initially at 8.30am, but I observed Customers kept coming and going. 🤔 I also noticed all of them seems to be Locals themselves with one Jolly Chap who even apparently came all the way from Penang specifically just to eat this. 😳 Everyone of these Customers all give me a very 老顾客 sort of feel. This Place feels like its Very Well Known among the Locals and everyone of them just seems so happy to be here purchasing and Chit Chatting with the Elderly Couple. 😄

Hahaha actually not only Popular among the Locals, as you can see in the Photo Display here, even our Singapore Artiste
鄭惠玉 Zoe Tay is a Fan of their 水晶包. 😳 One Customer even took the Effort to Draw a Fanart of them which they proudly frame it up as you can see. 🖼️

Protip: Most people will of course buy to Dabao Takeaway but they do have 1 Utility Table within that you can use to Dine-In if you want. 🍽️

The 水晶包 Crystal Dumplings

There are a Total of 6 Different Flavours, 2 Savoury, 4 Sweet.

芒光虾米 (Mangguang Haebee)
韮菜虾米 (Garlic Chives)
芋泥 (Yam Paste / Orr Nee)
甜豆沙 (Sweet Tau Sah)
紫薯泥 (Purple Sweet Potato Paste)
金瓜芋泥 (Pumpkin Orr Nee Paste Mix)

Each of them are wrapped using the Same Beautiful Crystaline Soft Kueh Skin and it tastes like a Very Very Soft Mochi with a Stretchy Sticky Texture and a Melt in Mouth Quality. 😋 People who have eaten from this Eatery before will know what I mean. My Vocabulary is just not good enough to describe how Soft this Kueh Skin was! 😋 It was So Soft, they're stretched so thin across the Inner Fillings which created a Beautiful See Through Quality without any Breakage. 😳

From a Culinary Perspective, it is really Challenging to handle such a Soft Kueh Dough especially when wrapping something as troublesome like Koo Chye. 🤔 And yet I can't help but feel amazed as I marvelled at the Elder 大哥 just casually wrapping them as he Chit-Chatted with me. 😳 This is YEARS of Experience. It really felt as if I was watching a Master in Action. 👍 Really Soft Dough, no joke. It was actually Challenging to try to hold them with my Chopsticks while I take Photos of them. 😅

Homemade Chilli Paste

Other than their Beautiful 水晶包, they also have a Homemade Chilli. 🌶️ Its Thick and Viscous and has a Robust Garlic Base. Initially Spicy but the Spiciness doesn't linger long and "Dissolves into an Earthiness" is how I describe this.

I believe it when they say this is Homemade. 👍 This is a Good Solid Chilli Mix that definitely doesn't taste like its from some Bottle somewhere.

芒光虾米 (Mangguang Haebee)

With a Beautiful Slightly Golden Hue to it wrapped with that Amazing Crystaline Kueh Skin, this really does look like a Crystal like how its name suggests. 💎
Upon biting into it, your Teeth will just go through the Skin with Zero Resistance. 😋 Once you reach the Filling, there will be a Satisfying Amount of Shredded Mangguang and Haebee that will Simply Explode into your Mouth. 💥

The Mangguang has a Delightful Soft Crunch that is Slightly Saltish and with a Noticeable Presence of Haebee and also a Tinge of Peppery Hit. According to them, this is one of their Most Popular Choice and I can tell why. Eating this feels like 酒楼 Quality type of 水晶包. ❤️ I'm not trying to Exaggerate, but it is really that good! I Love This! ❤️

韮菜虾米 (Garlic Chives / Koo Chye)

Admittedly I'm not a Fan of Koo Chye 🥬  so I'm not a Fan of this. 😅 But even so, I thought the "Koo-Chyeness" is surprisingly not as strong as others I've eaten before. 🤔 Amount of Veggie within is Generous and again they explode and swim all over your mouth when you eat this. Not particularly salty or anything, just a Mouthful of Veggie Bite. 🥬 The Name also suggests there are Haebee within but I don't taste it myself. If you are someone who enjoys Koo Chye though, you will probably enjoy this too. 👍

芋泥 (Yam Paste / Orr Nee)

If you are a Fan of Orr Nee, you are absolutely going to love this. 😋 The Sweetness for this is so Delicate. What I am especially impressed is how Absolutely Soft and Smooth the Texture of the Orr Nee was. 😋 There was not a Single Bit of Grittiness to it, it was so Smooth, the whole thing was practically swimming in my Mouth. In fact this goes the same for all the Fillings within their Sweet 水晶包. Super Smooth. 😋 Especially when the Crystal Skin itself is already so Insane Soft, eating it with this Equally Soft and Smooth Textured Orr Nee was like 软上加软. Superb! 👍

金瓜芋泥 (Pumpkin Orr Nee Paste Mix)

This one is exactly the same as the Orr Nee Version except there is an Extra Pumpkin Paste on top. 🎃 I'll be honest, I'm not sure if its really Pumpkin or just Orr Nee with a Yellow Colouring because I felt the Orr Nee Taste is simply too prominent for me to taste any Pumpkin Paste. 😅 Still Very Good Tasting and the I love the Beautiful Golden Yellow Appearance of this one. 👍

紫薯泥 (Purple Sweet Potato Paste)

The Filling used for this one is Definitely Sweet Potato and from the Colour, it looks like they specifically used the Purple Variety. 🍠 Again the Texture was so Smooth and Creamy. I really love the Gao Gao Sweet Potato Taste that again is Not Overly Sweet. 😋 If you like Sweet Potato, you will also probably enjoy this.

甜豆沙 (Sweet Tau Sah)

Among all the 水晶包, this was the one where they honestly admitted that the Filling is not Homemade by them. 🤔 Despite that, I thought this Tau Sah is still a Very Good Quality. Similar Smooth with No Gritty Texture, while it does not have a Natural Adzuki Bean Taste, it still had a Very Rich Taste to it interestingly with a Unique Subtle Hint of Honey 蜂蜜. 🍯  Whichever Supplier they got this Filling from certainly did a Good Job. This Tau Sah doesn't taste cheaply made is what I'm saying. 👍

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

At the Price of RM1.60 (S$0.50) for each of the 水晶包, I personally feel that they are Criminally Under-Priced for what they are! 😅 I'm seriously not Exaggerating when I say these Look and Taste like 酒楼 Level of 水晶包 Crystal Dumplings. They would absolutely not be out of place if served in a Atas Chinese Restaurant. 👍

The Beautiful Soft Crystal Skin was really the Soul from which all the 水晶包 were all built upon. 💎 It was such a Solid Foundation that it worked with Every Filling they used. 👍 Super Soft Texture, yet Durable enough to Wrap Everything and not have any Breakage. Remember, these Kuehs need to go thru a Steaming Process too, so it is Exceptionally Amazing that they can withstand that without breakage. 👍

Other than that Fantastic Crystal Skin, all of the Fillings themselves carried their weight too. Every one of them were very Well Made. Especially for the Sweet Versions, all of the Pastes (even the Tau Sah) have this Very Uniform Smooth and Creamy Texture with Zero Grittiness. 😋 Even if you Disregard their Taste, what really impressed me the Most is that Each and Every 水晶包 is Individually Lovingly and Painstakingly Crafted and Handmade. ❤️ For people who have made Kuehs like this before, you will know the Amount of Patience required to be able to focus and work on them. 😅

Watching this Adorable Elderly Couple in Action is like watching 2 Masters in Action. ❤️ The Amount of Hard Work and Epic Skill Level they displayed here right before my Very Eyes floored me completely and I only had to pay RM1.60 (S$0.50) for each of them. Do you now begin to understand why I say their 水晶包 is Criminally Under-Priced? 😅
It was a Pity that I had other places to eat or I would have just stayed here the Whole Day munching these Non-Stop. 😅

The 2 of them were so Adorably Friendly and Welcoming that I felt Completely at Home when I visited this place. ❤️ Without a Doubt, this has got to be one of the Easiest Highest Top Score I've given so far. 😄
I really do Highly Recommended to come visit this as soon as you can. Because they are obviously Advanced in Age, 🤔 it may not be long before Age finally catches up and forces them to Retire in the Future.

  1. Hi Ryan, already post until June, I think you should be able to complete your 2025 posting by end of this month. This crystal skin kuih long time already, ya the skin texture really soft and nice. As for the filling I personally prefer the mang kuang hae bee. If they retire, don't think got anyone take over the kuih business. This Jalan Biru area should be from the 80's.

    1. Nice to hear from you again! Ya been busy churning out the Old Reviews. 😅 I've still got alot more to go tho. 2023 posts for example still very much in progress, and there's also Sarawak Kuching, Penang, HK, Taiwan and many more. Haizz still long way to go. 😭

Today though, I will be focusing on re-uploading the KL / Klang Reviews. 🇲🇾 By end of this Month, I should have uploaded all the KL / Klang reviews where I left off the other time. 👍 Once 2026 comes along, I will continue from where I left off.

Of course I will continue to upload the old reviews in the background lah, but they will not interfere with the Newer Posts. I LOVE that Blogger allows the Backdating of Posts like this! 😄

Ya I love this place very much. And yes once they retire liao no more chance to taste anymore. 🤔 I heard from Leenah that this is the case for many 老店 in Malaysia too where the Younger Generation don't want to takeover. 😞 Actually this is also same situation in Singapore.

Nevermind lah, no matter what happens, enjoy it while we still can ba. 😋 They also deserve to enjoy their retirement la hahaha. But I'm sure going to miss that Beautiful Soft Dough Skin! ❤️

  2. Hi Ryan, I was a wee bit busy with my work. But busy busy also I still go for my regular volunteer works at Cats shelter and Buddhist temple. Busy still need to eat, play, shop and go Spore. hahahaha... Past few weekends went China town eat Chili pan mee, Garden by the bay, Changi Jewel & Tampines. I went Tampinies Central tapau dinner from Damascus Delights, the fellow like jaw drop when I told him I want bring back to JB. hahahaha....So far their middle east food very tasty, brought few times already.

Ya, alot of old shops their children not keen to take over the business especially hawker stalls. Actually selling food is the most tiring job. So we enjoy while it last cos alot of old fashion kuih, pau now factory make so the taste different from handmake. But there are some stubborn old folks refuse to pass down their recipes. die die want bring along to heaven.

    1. yea end of year many saikang to clear off for next year's new saikang 😅 hahaha you are more Singaporean than me 😅 Didn't even know there's a place called Damascus Delights. I wonder if they are related to the KL franchise tho. 🤔

as for older gen don't want to pass down, I reckon they're looking to cash out with a buyer for their recipe ba 😅 maybe this will work better back in the 1960s, 1980s when there was no internet but personally I find this "selling of recipe" abit redundant because nowadays given you can look up a recipe for almost anything on Internet or YouTube and there will be tutorials already. 😅 it's just a matter of taste adjustment la.
