This is a Famous Eatery here in Tampoi that although their 招牌 showcases their BKT, 🐷 is more well-known for their Poached Fish. 🐟 Their BKT interestingly has its fair share of Critics. Its a Really Big Eatery and there weren't much Customers as of 8.30am on a Friday Morning. 🕒 Manned by Mostly Myanmar Folks, they are Polite and Friendly and there was even a Chap among them who could converse in Fluent Mandarin. Very Friendly Fellow. 👍






How to Order your Food:
1) If you're ordering their Poached Fish, simply go up to the Staff near the Big Bucket of Fish and choose the Fish you want. 🐟
2) Once chosen, request to weigh the Fish and check the Price before confirming your choice. ⚖️
3) If you're ordering BKT, just order normally by telling the Staff what you want.
It took 5 Mins for the BKT to be served up and 8 Mins for the Poached Fish. In total, it took 8 Mins for everything to be served up. Really fast. Poaching a Fish usually takes between 4-10 Mins, so this was a Nice Timing, 👍 although to be fair there weren't alot of Customers when I was there.
The Condiments available are pretty standard with what you'd normally get if you order BKT. A Typical Saltish Sweetish Garlicky Sauce. 🍯
The Slightly Bigger Plate of Light Soy Sauce is heavily powered by Onion and Garlic with a Nice Sweetish Saltish hit.

They seem to only have Soupy BKT and no Dry Versions. 🤔 I personally like that they specifically have a BKT set for a Solo Diner. 👍 I also loved that there are Zero Attempts to Upsell and ask you to order More Chapalang DLC. ❤️ The BKT itself had a Delicious Beautiful Presentation chock full of Ingredients already. No wonder there weren't any attempts at Upselling more Ingredients.

There has been alot of Critiques and Comments about this BKT Soup. 🤔 Some People love it, and some People Absolutely Hate it.
Upon my 1st Taste of it, I can confirm that this is Definitely not Klang-Style but is still a Herbal Type of BKT. 🤔 In fact the Herbal Taste for this is the Sweet Sweet Type. 🤔
Eatbook did a Review of this before and mentioned that they use "Chinese Liquorice 甘草". 🌿 I do agree with their viewpoint that this has a Noticeable Medicinal Sweetness and isn't something that will appeal to everyone for a BKT. 🤔
I personally am not a Fan of the Sweet Sweet type of Herbal, but for some reason, I still enjoyed this version. 👍 What I am impressed is that from a Culinary Viewpoint, this Soup doesn't taste Diluted and tastes like they actually spent Effort on this and doesn't feel at all that they are scrimping on Quality. 👍 I like this Soup myself, although I can understand why some other people may not.
What I am impressed with this BKT are how Generous the Portions of Ingredients given. 👍 For this 1 Person Set you get:
🐷 1.5 Pork Ribs Cut into 4 Pieces
🐷 4 Pork Liver Slices
🐷 4 Pieces of Intestine Cuts
🐷 3 Pieces of Pork Belly
⬜ 1 Beancurd Skin
⬜ 1 Piece of Taupok

The Pork Rib Pieces were Meaty and were Soaked Well in the Soup. 👍 Didn't taste Overly Porky. Pork Belly had a Slight Elevated Level of Pigginess but was still ok for me. I really like the Solid Meaty Chew it gave. Nice. 😋 Intestines do have abit of 苦味 within but to me it was still fine as there isn't any Overly Unpleasantness other than the Slight Bitterness. So you might want to take note of this. 🤔
Liver Pieces were Thick Cuts and can be a Tad Heavy on the Livery Taste but I am also still ok with this. Overall, I have no issues with the Quality. 👍 This was a Decently Priced BKT with Decent Amount of Ingredients for the Price. 👍




🐟 招牌特色汆烫鱼 (石斑鱼) Signature Boiled Fish (Grouper) 500g = RM39.00
This is of course the Main Signature Dish for this Place. I am already impressed when Customers have the choice of literally choosing the Fish available in their Ice Bucket when ordering this. ❤️ I'm no Fish Expert but if this is the 1st Time you're choosing a Fish, at the very least choose 1 that has Clear and Clean Looking Eyes. 🐟 This is a Basic Indicator of a Fish's Freshness. There are Many Varieties of Fishes available and all of them at least from my 1st Glance looked Fresh. 👍

Since I'm a Solo Diner, I got them to help me choose a Smaller One and the one they chose was a 500g 石斑鱼 Grouper. 🐟 Pretty Standard Fish for Seafood I reckon. Do note that no matter which fish you choose, they only have 1 Style of Preparation, which is to Poach/Steam it. I have no issues with this because Steaming/Poaching is actually the Best (Healthiest) method to enjoy the Original 原味 Taste of a Fish. 👍


When it was served up, I thought it was filleted and presented decently. 🔪 The 1st thing I noticed are the Copious Amounts of Garlic Pieces slathered all over the Fish. 🤔 I liked the Sauce they lum for this Fish. It was a Strong Solid Presence of Sesame Oil Soy Sauce Mix with a Robust Garlic Base. 🍯 Salty but not Overly So, this was a Very Good Sauce Base for a Steamed Fish like this. 👍


The 石斑鱼 itself was a Big Fat Chonky Boy. 🐟 Clean and Fresh Tasting with Zero Fishiness. 😋 The Copious Amount of Garlic Pieces and Scallions did their work obviously, but I feel they may have gone a Tad Overboard with them. 🤔




The Taste of the Fish Meat is Tender Soft but also Completely Engulfed with that Garlic Pieces so much so that I couldn't really taste the Original 原味 of the Fish itself. 😅 In fact there are so much Garlic Pieces that they actually became a Detriment to the Overall Dish because eventually you'll start to Jelak and feel that the Garlic Pieces actually start tasting abit 苦. 😅 To counteract against this Overly Strong Garlicness, I recommend to add that Onion Infused Soy Sauce because the Presence of Fresh Onion will help distract you from the Garlic Jelakness. 🤔

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At the Price of RM15.00 (S$4.60) for this BKT is a Reasonable Price to pay for this Quality and the Amount of Ingredients given. 👍 I personally feel that the Amount of Ingredients weren't Stingy and actually felt Very Reasonable for the Price they're asking. 👍 Having said that, whether this BKT works for you or not is Highly Dependent if you can accept the Sweetish Herb 甘草 that they used for this BKT Soup Base. 🌿🤔
Do not come here expecting this to taste Savoury or Klang Style and you might enjoy this more. 🤔 As I mentioned, I myself prefer a More Savoury Soup but I could still enjoy the Sweetish Version here because I was prepared for it. 👍 This BKT Soup may not appeal to everyone but I can recommend to still give this a try because there is Actual Effort being put into this. 👍 Not at all Diluted and there are No Evidence of 偷工减料 that I've tasted at least.
At the Price of RM39.00 (S$12.00) for a Full 500g 石斑鱼 is also worth the Money. 👍 I liked the fact that I could personally choose the Type of Fish myself which added very much to its Freshness. 🐟 This Dish worked because of 2 Major Factors, namely the Freshness of the Fish itself 🐟 and the Good Sauce Mix that they lum for this. 🍯 These 2 Components complimented each other Beautifully to elevate the Entire Dish altogether and I can totally understand why this is considered their Signature Dish of this Place. 👍
Having said that, I still feel that they could have gone a tad easier with the Garlic Pieces 😅 which I felt kind of disrupted the Overall Balance, although I also understand why they did it this way. 🤔 Obviously, the Main Purpose of the Garlic Pieces is to help reduce and remove any further Potential Fishiness and infuse it with a Garlicky Taste, 👍 but too much of it also felt like it exerted too much and tried to Overpower the Whole Dish. 🤔 I am someone who prefer to actually taste the Original Taste of a Meat/Fish so this style that they did was abit much for me. 🤔 I'm not saying they're wrong, but I feel they can maybe ease off abit on the amount of Garlic Pieces that they did. Reduce the Amount of Garlic Pieces by 50% would be Perfect. 👍

If you are someone who prefer a Lighter, More 原味 type of Poached/Steamed Fish, the version here might not appeal to you as much. 🤔 Again I must emphasize, there is nothing inherently wrong with their style, its just a matter of Personal Preference that's all. 👍
Ultimately, I definitely can still recommend this place because I feel the Prices feel Affordable for what they are. 👍 The Dishes are Decently Made and Taste Good. I also have no issues with the Customer Service of this place. 👍 The Myanmar Chap that spoke Mandarin to me was a Very Friendly Lad that made me feel Very Welcome. ❤️ Totally can understand why this place is so Highly Recommended in the Various Food Blogs written. 👍
