I watched a Malaysian Youtuber vlogged about this and gave his recommendation for Singapore Styled Yellow Hokkien Mee (HKM). 🍜 Malaysia's Hokkien Mee is actually the Darker Variety, not the Yellow Type we have in Singapore so of course I was intrigued to check out how this tasted. 🤔

This HKM Stall in Restoran Tu Tu Ho Kopitiam only opens in the Afternoon. Managed by 2 Very Friendly 大姐, one of them is the Main Cook while the other is her Assistant. Interestingly, when I ordered this, I was given the option if I want my Prawns Deshelled. 🦐 This is something unique that is not practiced by Singapore HKM Stalls. 🤔

Both Choices have their Merits. Of course its easier to eat when Deshelled, but with Shell-On, the Prawns can also 炒出香气. 🔥🦐 I told her I'm fine either way and leave it up to her. She did the Shell-On Version. I was the Only Customer at that time and the Dish was Fried in about 5 Mins. You can check out my Attached Video to see her in Action. 🎥

Teh-O-Kosong Ice = RM2.80

Decent Tasting, I thought the Teh-O Taste is quite Gao Gao and not Diluted.

So far I'm quite impressed with the 2 Beverages I bought from this Kopitiam.
Both were Very Decent Tasting. 👍

Singapore-Styled Hokkien Prawn Mee (Small) = RM8.00

When it was served up, I was immediately impressed by its Presentation. 👍 Even though a Small, I thought the Amount of Noodles and Ingredients didn't feel Stingy. 👍 This is the Wet Wet Type of HKM. I loved the Bright and Beautiful Colours of the Ingredients and the Dish had a Nice Delicious Familiar Aroma of Singapore-Styled Hokkien Mee. 炒的有模有样. 😄 I am especially impressed with the Noticeable Amount of Green Cabbage Leaves 🥬 which is something not found in Singapore's Version, but I thought provided a Very Welcome Extra Colour to the Dish. 👍

The Sambal Chili on the Side has a Solid, Deep Earthy Robust Profile. 🌶️ Not Sweet at all and has a Slightly Elevated Spiciness that will Linger awhile but never bites. 🌶️

What I particularly liked is this Tinge of Sourness that gave it a Nice Freshness. Excellent Sambal for HKM. 👍

This HKM Broth/Gravy is not those Gao Gao type that you'd expect in a Singapore Styled HKM. It tastes Light but not Bland. The Prawn Flavouring is Light and Gentle. 🦐 If you are someone who prefer your HKM to have a more 重口味 Gao Gao Prawny Taste, you may not like this version. 🤔

The Noodles themselves consists of a Mix of Yellow Noodles, White Noodles and Mee Hoon all soaked in that Prawn Gravy. 🍜🦐 While they are most certainly from a Package, they were Decently Soft and Tender to the Bite as you'd expect from a Standard HKM.

Protip: Because this is the Wet Wet Type of HKM, I would recommend to let this Dish sit for awhile to let the Noodles absorb the Gravy 吸饱汤汁 🍲 to get an even Smoother Creamier Texture. 😋

The Rest of the Ingredients are some Crunchy Taugeh, 🥬 Generous Amounts of Egg Pieces, 🥚a Generous Sprinkling of Fried Onion Pieces. 🧅 Noticeably Missing however are Pork Belly Pieces and they are replaced instead by Small Pieces of Processed Fish Cakes likely substituted as an Attempt to Cut Cost. 🤔 That said, I appreciate that the 2 Prawns provided were Big Sized Ones. 🦐 They taste Clean and Firm although not Bouncy. Prawn Meat tasted a Tad Dry although they weren't Overly Prawny.

When eating everything together with the Sambal and Calamansi Lime Mixed in, 🍋‍🟩 its still not a Very 重口味 type of HKM. I do feel that the Texture of the Noodles becomes even Creamier with an Ever Present Tease of Spiciness. 🌶️

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

At the Price of RM2.80 (S$0.90) for this Teh-O-Kosong Ice is worth it. 👍 Taste is quite Gao Gao and not Diluted. 👍

At the Price of RM8.00 (S$2.50) is an Affordable Price for this Decent Plate of Singapore-Styled Hokkien Mee with 2 Big Fat Prawns. 🦐 There is no way you will get to enjoy such a Price for a Similar Sized Plate in Singapore. 😅

Other than the Missing Pork Belly, I thought all the Other Ingredients performed well enough and I was pleasantly surprised to find Lettuce Leaves 🥬 which is very rarely found for SG-Styled HKM. 🤔 They are a Simple Addition yet their Fresh Green Colour really made the Dish much more Visually Impressive. 👍
Having said that, this is a Light and Gentle and Not 重口味 type of HKM. 🍜 For some people this will be the Main Make or Break Factor. 🤔 If you are someone who prefers a Robust Strong Prawny Gao Gao 重口味 type of HKM, you might not like the version here. I was also abit thrown off by the Dryness of the Prawn Meat. 🤔

Overall not a Mind-Blowing Amazing type of Singapore HKM, but I can still recommend this because I feel this is still a Decent and Affordable Plate of HKM and the 2 Ladies running this Place are Very Nice and Friendly. 😄 If you are ever here in Tampoi, why not swing by this place and give this a try?
