Just like Johor Laksa, Kacang Pool is a Unique Specialty Dish of Johor. 🇲🇾 The name itself means "Pool of Beans" 🫘 and is inspired by an Egyptian Bean Dish called "Ful Medame". (Source: Atlas Obscura) This Dish is also available in Singapore although its more Rarely Seen. 🤔 In JB, apparently the Most Famous Stall that sells this is a Shop called "Kacang Pool Haji" located in Larkin. (Credits to Amelia Seah for the Information), This Shop that I'm visiting is one of their Branch in the Medan Selera (Food Court) of Angsana Mall.
Despite its Famous Status, it is a Very Non-Descript Food Stall among the other Many Stalls in this Food Court. 🍽️ The Most Prominent thing you'll see are Buttered Bread Loaves being Deliciously Grilled and Toasted on the Hotplate. 🍞
The Stall is run by a Pair of Very Humble and Friendly Pakcik and Makcik. ❤️ They are more comfortable with conversing in Malay and if you are able to use Basic Malay like how you order Malay Food in a Singapore Food Stall, you should have no issues. As there weren't much Customers around, the Dish was served up quickly in 2 Mins.

The Dish itself is essentially a Bowl of Minced Meat 🍖 and Bean Dip 🫘 topped with a Sunny-Side Egg 🍳 and served with a Side of Thick Toasted Bread. 🍞 The 1st Thing I noticed immediately was a Noticeable Aroma of Cut Fresh Red Onion wafting from it. 🧅

The Amount of Dip in the Small Bowl is not alot, I would say maybe 1/4 of the Bowl. 🤔 When I tasted it, the 1st thing that immediately came to my mind is that it totally taste like A&W's Coney Dog Gravy. 🌭😅 You know that Minced Meat Sauce that they Lum all over their Coney Dog? Exactly the Same Taste. 🤔
Slightly Sweetish with a Very Faint Hint of Sourness, the Main Protein in this Dip is Soft Minced Beef 🍖 and the Amount of Meat Feels Generous 口口有肉. 😋 Because the Dish is called "Kacang Pool", there are also a Mixture of Beans within. Some of these Beans are even Big and Fat types. 🫘 The Taste Profile at this Point tastes like a Western-Styled Minced Meat Bean Dip of Sorts. 😋

When you mix in the Chopped Onion 🧅 and Green Chilli Pieces 🌶️ and Squeeze in the Calamansi Juice, 🍋🟩 this Western-Styled Dip is Enhanced and Elevated with a Sourish Freshness that gives it a More Familiar South-East Asian Type of Taste Profile. 😋 I thought it was really interesting to have 2 Different Region Profiles in a Single Gravy like this. 👍
The Bread Toast is a Thicky Chonky Boy that is at least 2 Toasts Thick, beautifully buttered up and Toasted Golden Brown on Both Sides. 🍞 Outside Crispy and Toasty, and Inside is Soft and Fluffy. Delightful. 😋
Eating this Toasted Bread with the Dip completes the Dish. 👍 What you get is a Nice Balance of Meaty Sourish Tangy Gravy occasionally peppered with Oniony Fresh Crunchiness and all of that being supported with a Crispy Soft Bread that acts as a Carb Canvas to Carry them. 🍞 Absolutely Delightful. 😋

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At the Price of RM7.00 (S$2.10), this was an Affordable Price for this Unique Dish. 👍 You are getting a Generous Amount of Minced Beef that is cooked into this Dip. 🍖 Although the Amount of Dip itself didn't feel alot, I thought it was actually just the Right Amount for the Amount of Bread that you're given. Because of that, I never felt Jelak or Too Full when I was eating this. 不多不少就是刚刚好. 👍
Culinarily, I thought this was a Clever Mix of Ingredients that can combine Protein, Fiber and Carbs into a Neat Little Package that is both Filling and Nutritious for a Breakfast. 😋 Everything in this Dish has a Specific Purpose and all of them work well together as a Cohesive Whole. 👍
Whoever first invented this Dish must have had a Strong Culinary Sense and knew what they were doing. ❤️ This was a Well Designed and Well Executed Dish that surprisingly tasted both Western and Asian at the Same Time. 👍 Heck I'm so impressed with this Dish that I need to learn how to make this myself! 😅 A Dish that can make me feel this way surely deserves my Top Score. ⭐Of course my Top Score is also given because of the Very Humble and Friendly Pakcik and Makcik. ❤️ They're so Adorable together manning the Stall. ❤️ After I finished my meal, I went up to them to give them a Thumbs Up which they appreciated. Bagus! 👍 If you have never tried Kacang Pool before, I can certainly recommend this place to give it a try. 😋
