If you are a Regular in City Square, you will most likely have seen this Chinese Restaurant before. There is another Restaurant in the Mall that also has the "-i" Affix. Dragon-i and Canton-i. I reckon they're both related Sister Companies? 🤔 This is of course a Classic Chinese Restaurant. Beautifully Renovated, it takes up a Relatively Large Area with about 17 Tables. The Place is Atas Looking and Cleanly Well Maintained. 👍

Protip:
There is a Very Nice Balcony Seating in this Restaurant that has a Magnificent View of the Mall as you can see in this Photo. ❤️
I highly recommend that you request for this Location because I felt the Nice View added alot and Enhanced my Dining Experience. 😄
Although there weren't much Customers when I was there at 11.00am on a Thursday, I was very surprised to see a Super Long Queue when I finished my Meal and left as you can see in this Photo. 😳 I think this is the 1st time I've seen such a Massive Queue for this Restaurant. No idea why it suddenly 爆满 that day. 😳

The Staffs were Dressed Smartly and behaved Professionally as you'd expect from a Atas Level Restaurant like this. 👍 The Spectacled Lady Staff who attended to me looked like a Senior Staff with the more Formal Suit she wore. I appreciate she took the effort to let me know that I can put my Bag on their Chair and not put in on the Floor. 👍
Because this is an Atas Higher End Restaurant, I did my Usual Test Request to check if they could serve up all my Dishes at the same time. For any New Readers, I do this Test only for Higher End Eateries. Hahaha this actually started in 936 Kitchen in Danga Bay which I reviewed previously. 😅
Because each Dish has a Different Preparation Time, this test is not only to see the Time Management of the Kitchen, 🕜 but in a way also to test the Customer Service Quality of the Customer Facing Service Staff when faced with such a Request. 🤔 Whether they can or cannot do it really doesn't matter, I'm more focused on how they go about handling my Request. 🤔
Back to the Review, I liked that this Lady Staff took my Request seriously and even kept me updated that she has relayed my Request to the Kitchen. 👍 Although they were ultimately unable to do it, I'm of course not going to fault them as I could tell she has tried her best. 👍
Chargeable Items to take Note:
As with any Atas Higher End Restaurant like this, there are of course Small Items that are Chargeable. If this is someting that concerns you, you might want to take note of them. 🤔
1) Wet Towel on the Table is a Chargeable Item in the Final Bill whether you use it or not.
2) The Staffs will try to Soft-Sell a Small Plate of Braised Peanuts Appetizer. 🥜 If you don't want to pay for this, go ahead and reject them.
Moving on, the Main Signature Specialty in this Place seems to be Peking Duck. 🦆 Unfortunately there are no Smaller Solo Portions. If you want to try this, your only option is to buy the Whole Duck. What they do have though are Xiao Long Baos and Pork Chop Egg Fried Rice, which although aren't listed under their "Chef Recommended" list, are still labeled as their Signatures. 😋
These 2 Dishes are also the Main 招牌菜 of the Famous Popular Taiwanese Restaurant Din Tai Fung who also have a Branch in City Square Mall. I figured I might as well give these a try and do a Deep-Dive Comparison Review between these 2 Restaurants. 🤔 I will post my findings for DTF as a Comparison too. It took 9 Mins for the Xiao Long Baos, and 10 Mins for the Pork Chop Fried Rice. Everything was served up in 10 Mins.
The Condiments and Sauces
No Complaints about the Soy Sauce here. It has a Good Quality Taste that is suitable for a Higher End Restoran like this. 😋 Doesn't taste like they anyhow get something from a Supermarket type.

The Chilli Oil in their Sambal Condiment is Solid. 👍 It has a Slight Spicy Fume and although has an Initial Elevated Level of Spiciness, 🌶️ it doesn't linger long. I like the Strong and Delicious Savoury Haebee Presence with a Gritty Texture and Slightly Saltish Taste. 😋
44 上海小笼包 Shanghainese Steamed Pork Dumplings (4 Pieces) = RM13.80
The Minimum Number of Xiao Long Baos you can order here are 4 Pieces compared to DTF's Minimum 6 Pieces. 🤔
Presentation of the Dish
Served up in a Big Traditional Bamboo Basket its padded with Parchment Paper which while Servicable, is a little more Lower End compared to DTF which uses a Piece of Cloth instead. 🤔
Appearance of the XLB
The XLB themselves are Solid Looking with No Breakage. 👍 Size is quite Standard for a XLB. Number of Pleated Folds look Decently Beautiful. Compared to DTF's style of Pleating, the version here has a More "Open Mouth" kai kou sort of Look. 🤔 I thought this was a Clever Technique as I reckon this will allow it to Vent any Stored Up Steam although this in turn may cause 汤汁 within to spill so you need to be More Careful when picking them up with a Chopstick. 🤔

Taste of the XLB
The Dough Skin was Slightly Thick but didn't taste Doughy. 👍 There are about 1 Tablespoon worth of 汤汁 within. Taste of this 汤汁 is Slightly Salty but Not Overly So. The Minced Pork Filling is Small, and Didn't Taste Porky. I liked that it had Small Lovely Pieces of Fat within which had a Melt in Mouth Effect when you chew them. 😋 Overall Decent Tasting, and I felt tasted Very Similar to DTF XLB. If there are any Differences, I really couldn't tell.

56 猪排炒饭 Fried Rice with Deep-fried Pork Chop = RM30.80
Note: Before I start, I want to add that I observed the Staff who served this ALMOST touched the Food on my Plate. ALMOST but didn't. 🤔 So please take note of this.
Presentation of the Dish
When this was served up, I was Very Surprised to see that Dragon-i chooses to De-Construct and SEPARATE the Fried Rice and Pork Chop on Different Plates, 😳 compared to DTF who serves this Classic Dish with the Slab of Pork Chop on top of the Bed of Fried Rice. I applaud them for taking this Bold Approach because this uniquely distinguishes them from how DTF does it so they won't be called out or be accused for trying to 100% copy DTF. 😅
Having said that, I felt separating the 2 Components like this made it look Less Impressive? 🤔 The Dish didn't have a "Cohesive Look" and looked alot more Mundane compared to DTF where the Dish is stacked high together. 🤔 In Dragon-i's Menu Photo, they even showed it stacked together, so I don't understand why they decided to Separate them and take on an Extra Job to wash 1 more Additional Plate? 🤔

Presentation aside, Culinarily-Wise, I also felt they missed a Good Opportunity to let the Pork Chop flavour the Fried Rice. 🤔 Let me explain. If you were to take the Freshly Fried Pork Chop sit on top of the Fried Rice, it will not only help flavour the Rice by having the Pork Chop's Fragrant Savoury Oil drip down, the Pork Chop itself can also acts as a "Meat Blanket" to help smother and keep the Rice more Moist and Dry Out Lesser. 🤔 This particular point is my next thing I will elaborate when I discuss about the Taste later.
Appearance and Taste of the Fried Rice
The Amount of Fried Rice given is Decent and Acceptable for the Price. 👍 Compared to DTF, I thought it had a More Uniform "Golden Yellow" 金黄 Cohesive Look with the Yellow Yolk Pieces. 👍 The Type of Rice used looks like Short-Grained 珍珠米 which looks like the Same as DTF.
In Comparison, DTF Fried Rice had a more Patchy Look with Egg Whites disrupting the Uniform Yellow Uniformity Look. 🤔 Although to be fair to DTF, their Fried Rice is never meant to look "Naked" like this because it is presented with Pork Chop covering it. 😅 I liked the Fried Aroma Fragrance that accompanies this Fried Rice and although not alot, there is some Wok Hei. 🔥 You can even see the Little Mini Charredness on some of the Grains.

The Rice itself has a Grainy Texture and the Egginess is Not Overly Overpowering and doesn't try to Dominate too much. 😋 The Whole Thing tastes Light and Fluffy and Not Overly Salty. Not Too Wet, Not Too Dry, and Not Too Oily. This is a Very Decent Quality of Fried Rice that I'm sure Uncle Roger himself will probably approve. Hahaha! 😅
Appearance and Taste of the Fried Pork Chop
Served in 8 Pieces compared to the 6 Pieces by DTF, Dragon-i's Pork Chop has a Noticeably Lighter Outer Look compared to DTF which had a Deeper and More Caramelized Look. 🤔Thickness of the Pork Chop felt Slightly Thicker than DTF. 🤔 If you look at the Photo Comparison when I post DTF, the Meat looks Juicier and has a More "Mashed-Up" Texture compared to DTF's more Well-Defined Muscle Texture. 🍖

Taste-Wise, I thought the Seasoning Power they used to Marinate it was Not Bad. 👍 Meat is Juicy but not Super Juicy despite the Look. Salted but Not Overly So. Personally I feel that Appearance Aside, I feel this Pork Chop doesn't taste too DIfferent from DTF version. Very Decent Tasting. 😋

Eating both Fried Rice and Pork Chop together
Despite each Individual Component tasting Very Decent on their Own, for some reason, when Eaten together, both of them didn't gel together. 🤔 Both of them didn't taste like they want to work together which each item like trying to want to Outperform the Other. 🤔
When eaten together, I especially noticed the Dryness of the Fried Rice which seems to be the Main Culprit. 🤔 There is always this Dryness that never seems to go away. This was very strange because I didn't feel this Dryness when I was eating the Fried Rice alone, but only felt it when I ate it WITH the Pork Chop. 🤔 Could this be the side-effect of Separating the Pork Chop from the Fried Rice which cause it to dry out faster and behave this way?

Don't get me wrong, its not Inedible, and this is still a Very Decent High End Restaurant Quality Taste, but I just can't shake off the feeling that both the Fried Rice and Pork Chop didn't work well together. 🤔 Adding their Excellent Sambal certainly helped alot especially with a Solid Injection of Haebee. 🌶️👍 The Sambal helped tremendously in forcing the 2 Components to work together because your attention is now focused more on the Haebeeness. I'm not kidding about this Sambal. 😅 Its so Good and Important to this Dish that eating the Dish without this Sambal actually felt alot more Lackluster. 🤔
Price Comparison of Xiao Long Bao (XLB):
4 Pieces (Dragon-i) = RM13.80 (S$4.30)
That makes 1 XLB cost RM3.45 (S$1.05)
6 Pieces (DTF) = RM18.10 (S$5.60)
That makes 1 XLB cost about RM3.05 (S$0.95)
Quality and Presentation Wise, other than some Minor Changes, I feel both XLB are Pretty Similar in Taste. 🤔 If we disregard that DTF has a More Famous Brand Recognition, DTF still has the Upperhand because:
1) The Little Attention to Details like using Cloth instead of Parchment Paper for Support which felt more Premium. 👍
2) The Price which is the Biggest Game Changer because DTF is Actually More Affordable Per XLB compared to Dragon-i. This was the Most Surprising Find for me. 😳

Price Comparison of Pork Chop Fried Rice
Dragon-i = RM30.80 (S$9.40)
DTF = RM30.17 (S$9.20)
Another Surprising Find! 😳 Despite the Higher Brand Recognition, DTF price is still More Affordable than Dragon-i? 😳 As I have written in my Review, I personally feel in terms of Presentation and Overall Taste, DTF is still a Clear Winner for me when it comes to Pork Chop Fried Rice. 🤔
Price Comparison between Service Charges/Taxes, Misc on the Final Bill
Dragon-i = RM8.30 (S$2.55)
DTF = RM7.73 (S$2.40)
Even when Comparing Service Taxes / Misc Charges like this, DTF amusingly still edges out as the Winner. 😅 It was Dragon-i's Mandatory RM1 Wet Tissue that was the Factor. Without it, Dragon-i might have won this Category. 😅
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
As you can see, when it comes to Quality and Price Point, I feel DTF is the Overall Winner in this Review. 🤔 But it is also not fair to just dismiss off Dragon-i because there are certain things that they actually did better than DTF if you've read my Review. 👍 One thing comes to mind is their Excellent Haebee Sambal compared to DTF's 红油. 😋🌶️

To be very Fair to Dragon-i, their True Signature Dish is their Peking Duck which DTF does not offer. 🦆 So to just simply dismiss them based on these 2 Dishes is an Extremely 肤浅 Shallow Thing to do and it is not my Goal for this Review. 👍 I also cannot disregard the Customer Service Quality of Dragon-i of which I am impressed with. 👍 Even if you disregard all of their Achievements, Dragon-i still has an Amazing More Premium Balcony-View Seating which DTF does not have! Hahaha! ❤️
