Note:
This Review will also be a Comparison to another Chinese Restaurant Dragon-i in this Mall as it also offered same 2 Food Items. 🤔 So if you want, you can treat this Review Post as a Companion Piece to that.

Introduction and Brief History of Din Tai Fung (DTF)

If you are new to this Eatery, this is a Taiwanese Franchise that originally started interestingly started off not as a Restaurant but rather as a Cooking Oil Retailer in 1958. 😅 I won't go into too much Details as you can easily google them if you are interested.

For Many Singaporeans, I think other than the Famous Haidilao (HDL), Din Tai Fung (DTF) may be the Next Most Popular F&B Franchise in Singapore. 👍 Every Weekend without Fail, you can see DTF Outlets in Singapore Fully Crowded and Packed to the Brim. 😅
Price Comparison between SG DTF and JB DTF

If you are only here for the Price Comparison between Singapore and JB DTF, here you go. 👍 I've chosen 2 of the Most Popular Signature DTF Dishes (which I myself enjoy) to do a Comparison.
Yes, JB DTF Prices are Significantly More Affordable Compared to Singapore DTF if you factor in Currency Conversion Rates. 🤔

Signature Xiao Long Bao (6 Pieces)
🇸🇬 2025 Singapore Price = S$13.50
🇲🇾 2025 JB Price = RM18.10 (S$5.60)

Signature Pork Chop Fried Rice
🇸🇬 2025 Singapore Price = S$14.30
🇲🇾 2025 JB Price = RM30.17 (S$9.20)

Interior of the Restaurant

One thing I've noticed DTF do very well is that they are VERY CONSISTENT across the board no matter which Branch they are. 👍
I've been to their Original Branch in Taiwan Xinyi back in 2018, and it doesn't matter whether its in 🇹🇼 Taiwan, 🇸🇬 Singapore or 🇲🇾 Malaysia JB, DTF maintains a Cohesive Similar Look for all their Restaurants without much Drastic Changes. 👍

Every DTF Branch looks Very Similar in Colour, Feel and even the Aroma that you get when you 1st Step into a DTF which if you notice is always a Very Nice Savoury Appetizing Soup Aroma. 😋

Customer Service Level

This Consistency goes towards the Attitude of the Staffs too. 👍 They are always Smartly Dressed and have a Professional Looking Poise. Even though they may be Busy, I noticed that they never let down that Iconic DTF Professional Fascade that they always have. 👍 This is something very Fascinating I notice whenever I visit a DTF.

Back in 2023 when I first visited JB DTF, I feel like they are Shortstaffed, and now 2 years later, its still the Same. 🤔 This is one aspect I feel DTF should improve because you can really tell that the Staffs here really need more help. 🤔 I am really impressed that they can still maintain their Professional Poise despite being so Busy. I'd have personally completely lost it myself. 😅

DTF Sauce Mixing Valued Service

One thing I really liked about the Customer Service here is that they will ask if you would like them to help you do their Signature DTF Sauce Mix. 👍 This Service is Completely Free of Charge of course.

If you have never eaten from a DTF before, this Sauce Mix is really meant for their Signature XLB. 🥟 Of course you can reject them and do your own Sauce Mix. 👍

This is something that Dragon-i that I reviewed previously never did. I was never offered by Dragon-i Staffs to do any Sauce Mix for their XLBs. 🤔
To be fair, Dragon-i did also display Good Customer Service when their Staff recommended that I may put my Bag on their Chair instead of the Floor which the Staffs at DTF never mentioned. 👍 Both are equally Good in this Regards and you can tell that both put in Effort as best as they can in terms of Customer Service. I have No Complaints Service Wise. 👍

I'm sorry, I think I must have forgotten, but I don't know why I never did my usual test of requesting to see if they could serve both my Dishes up together. 😅
Anyway, it took 6 Mins for the Pork Chop Fried Rice, and 9 Mins for the Xiao Long Baos. Everything was up within 9 Mins.

Review of the Condiments and Sauces

The Soy Sauce they have here is High End Restaurant Quality interestingly with a Slight Sweetness to it. 😋 The Rice Vinegar is Mildly Vinegary and Not Overly So. Also Good Quality Type, not something Cheapo you get from a Supermarket. 😅

Combining them together, I thought the Sauce Mix was Decent. 👍 It had a nice ratio of both Soy Sauce and their Rice Vinegar with Vinegar slightly edging out with its Sharp Tang.
The Sambal they have here is Not Actually Sambal but a More Chinese-Styled Chilli Oil 红油. 🤔🌶️ It has a Distinct Gritty Texture of Dried Chilli Flakes. The Spiciness is Elevated but doesn't Sting, and will Linger awhile.

Both Dragon-i and DTF have a Good Chilli Base with Dragon-i leaning more towards a Malaysia Styled Sambal, while DTF Chilli Condiment leans more towards Classic Chinese-Based
红油. 🌶️ Both taste Equally Good Quality for what they are and I have no issues with both. Although I feel Dragon-i edges a Win here because I prefer the Richer Tasting of our South-East Asian Sambal. 😋🌶️

201 小笼包 Pork Xiao Long Bao (6 Pieces) = RM18.10

This is of course DTF's Most Famous Dish. 😋
The Minimum Number of Xiao Long Baos you can order here are 6 Pieces compared to Dragon-i's Minimum 4 Pieces. 🤔

Presentation of the Dish
Served up in a Big Traditional Bamboo Basket its padded with a Piece of Cloth 👍 which Not Only Feels Premium, it is also Smart because it can not only Cushion the XLBs well, it can also absorb any Water Vapour much more efficiently compared to Parchment Paper. 👍 Plus it is Reusable which definitely is alot Better for the Environment compared to a Disposable Parchment Paper.

Appearance of the XLB
The Wrapping and Pleating Technique for DTF XLB is noticeably different. 🤔  They use a "Closed Mouth" Technique as opposed to the "Open Mouth" used by Dragon-i. 🤔 I'm unable to comment culinarily which Technique is Superior but DTF XLB 汤汁 does not accidentally spill when you pick them up.

DTF XLB however feels like they are Slightly Smaller than Dragon-i. 🤔  Obviously I am unable to do a Side-By-Side Comparison as I ate these on 2 different days, but it just feels a Tad Smaller. 🤔 Dough Skin is Not Dry or Doughy and Doesn't Break when you pick them up. 👍 I also can't confirm 100% but I feel that compared to Dragon-i's 1 Tablespoonful of
汤汁 per XLB, DTF also seems to have Slightly Lesser 汤汁. 🤔

Taste of the XLB
I feel DTF XLB 汤汁 has a Slightly More Meaty and Robust Flavour compared to Dragon-i. 😋🍖 Quality of Meat Filling feels about the Same, but I feel DTF version tasted a Tad Softer and had a Creamier and Fattier Bitefeel. 😋 When eating the XLB with their DTF Sauce Mix, the Robust Meatiness of the Soup toned down Significantly and this Sauce Mix gave the XLB a Fresh Savoury Taste. 😋

Unlike Dragon-i which has No Sauce, DTF Sauce Mix is an Important Component of the Dish.
Adding abit of DTF's Chilli 红油 did not destroy the Taste but in fact added an Exciting Spicy Tease. 🌶️ If you are someone who likes a Bit of Spicy Kick, I can recommend to dab some for your XLB.

501 猪排蛋炒饭 Pork Chop Egg Fried Rice = RM30.17

Presentation of the Dish
Compared to Dragon-i who separates their Pork Chop from their Fried Rice, DTF chooses to Stack them on top of each other to give it its Iconic Look. ❤️ As I mentioned in Dragon-i's Review, I feel this Stacked Up Presentation looks a Whole Lot more Impressive with a Very Cohesive Feel. ❤️

Appearance and Taste of the Fried Rice

Compared to Dragon-i, the Yellow Pieces of Egg don't look as Uniformly Distributed and Looks Patchy with Bits of Egg White mixed with the Yolk Pieces. 🤔 The Egg Pieces in DTF also seems to be cut into Larger pieces compared to the Very Small Bits seen in Dragon-i's Version. 🤔 The Type of Rice used looks like Short-Grained 珍珠米 which looks about the same as the Type that Dragon-i used too. Although like I mentioned previously to be fair to DTF, their Fried Rice is never meant to look "Naked" like this because it is presented with Pork Chop covering it. 😅

Like Dragon-i, this Fried Rice has a Similar Delicious Fried Aroma. 😋 When you bite into it, I don't know why but I just feel DTF Fried Rice has a Noticeable Softer Texture and Smoother and More Moist Feel. 👍 Dragon-i's Fried Rice is Smooth also yes, but DTF just feels a Tad Smoother down my Throat for some reason. 🤔 Could this be the Advantage of having the Pork Chop cover the Fried Rice as a "Meat Blanket" which helped with this Slightly More Smoother Moist Texture that I felt?

Appearance and Taste of the Fried Pork Chop
Served in 6 Cuts instead of Dragon-i's 8 Cuts, DTF Pork Chop also has a Very Noticeable More Deeper Caramelized Look. 👍 The Appearance of the Meat however doesn't look as Juicy as Dragon-i, and actually looks abit Dry. 🤔

Thickness of the Pork Chop felt Slightly Thinner than Dragon-i. 🤔 If you look at the Photo Comparison when I post DTF, the Meat looks Drier, but you can see the Muscle Texture Much More Clearly compared to Dragon-i's "Mashed-Up" Texture. 🍖

The Most Interesting Thing I felt that really differentiates between DTF and Dragon-i is that when I bite into a DTF Pork Chop, I feel like i'm eating a Particularly Thick and Juicy Bak Kwa. 😋 DTF Pork Chop really have a Very Bak Kwa Taste Profile for me. Perhaps this is the Effect of having a More Deeper Caramelized Outer Skin? 🤔 I never got this Unique Bak Kwa Feeling when I was eating Dragon-i's Version. Not Overly Oily, it has a Nice Savoury 油香味 that just has a Deeper and More Robust Meaty Taste compared to Dragon-i's Version. 😋

Eating both Fried Rice and Pork Chop together
This is the part where I feel DTF very obviously outshine Dragon-i. 👍 When I eat both Components together, I never felt that each item is trying to outdo the other. The 2 of them just felt like they worked together in harmony and never clashed. 👍 I feel the Moistness of the Fried Rice was a Huge Contributor in helping the 2 of them work well.

Unfortunately, unlike Dragon-i's Excellent Sambal which helped inject a Solid Dose of Rich Haebee, DTF's Chinese-Styled
红油 did not work as well. 🤔 I thought the Spiceness harshly disrupted the Harmony of the Base Taste. 🌶️ I mean if you want some Spiciness, feel free to add it, but I personally feel the Dish tasted better without this 红油. I wish I have Dragon-i's Excellent Sambal in this Pork Chop Fried Rice! 😅

Price Comparison of Xiao Long Bao (XLB):

4 Pieces (Dragon-i) = RM13.80 (S$4.30)
That makes 1 XLB cost RM3.45 (S$1.05)

6 Pieces (DTF) = RM18.10 (S$5.60)
That makes 1 XLB cost about RM3.05 (S$0.95)

Quality and Presentation Wise, other than some Minor Changes, I feel both XLB are Pretty Similar in Taste. 🤔
If we disregard that DTF has a More Famous Brand Recognition, DTF still has the Upperhand because:

1) The Little Attention to Details like using Cloth instead of Parchment Paper for Support which felt more Premium. 👍

2) The Price which is the Biggest Game Changer because DTF is Actually More Affordable Per XLB compared to Dragon-i. This was the Most Surprising Find for me. 😳

Price Comparison of Pork Chop Fried Rice

Dragon-i = RM30.80 (S$9.40)
DTF = RM30.17 (S$9.20)

Another Surprising Find! 😳 Despite the Higher Brand Recognition, DTF price is still More Affordable than Dragon-i? 😳
As I have written in my Review, I personally feel in terms of Presentation and Overall Taste, DTF is still a Clear Winner for me when it comes to Pork Chop Fried Rice. 🤔

Price Comparison between Service Charges/Taxes, Misc on the Final Bill

Dragon-i = RM8.30 (S$2.55)
DTF = RM7.73 (S$2.40)

Even when Comparing Service Taxes / Misc Charges like this, DTF amusingly still edges out as the Winner. 😅
It was Dragon-i's Mandatory RM1 Wet Tissue that was the Factor. Without it, Dragon-i might have won this Category. 😅

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

As you can see, when it comes to Quality and Price Point, I feel DTF is the Overall Winner in this Review. 👍
There is a Reason why DTF is a Highly Recognized World-Famous Branding and the Proof is in the Quality. 👍 There is another Reason why I really like DTF and that is its Consistency across the Board.

Like I mentioned, it doesn't matter where you eat DTF. Whether you are eating it in Taiwan, Singapore or Malaysia, everything from the Restaurant Decor, Lighting, Staff Service Level, Ambience and Taste of the Food is CONSISTENT. 👍
This Level of Consistency is really a Main Factor why I'm giving my Highest Top Score to DTF. 🏆 To be able to maintain this Level of Consistency spanning across the Globe is really not easy. 🌏 Can you imagine the amount of Quality Control they need to do in order to achieve this level?

Having said that, it has been 7 Years since I last visited DTF in Taiwan. 🤔 I am REALLY looking forward to visit it again this Coming March 2025 to Review Taiwan's DTF to see if this Consistency has Maintained. 👍

But just because I gave a Higher Score to DTF does not mean that Dragon-i is Inferior. Far from it. 🤔 There are some things that Dragon-i did that are actually better than DTF. One thing comes to mind is their Excellent Haebee Sambal compared to DTF's
红油. 😋🌶️ Like I mentioned previously, to simply dismiss Dragon-i just based on these 2 Dishes I reviewed is an Extremely 肤浅 Shallow Thing to do and it is not my Goal for this Review.

Of course, because Din Tai Fung is such a World Famous Brand, there will definitely be Critics or People who just don't like them for whatever reason. 😅 But thats ok. Because Everyone's Taste is Different and this Review is just my Own Personal Opinion. 👍 All I'm doing here is just report as best as I can about my Personal Experience. Give them both a Try and make your own Decision. Ultimately, its your Own Taste that really matters.
Have you eaten from this Eatery in JB City Square Mall? I'd love to know how you think of them! 😄
