This is a Famous Food Stall in the Chinese Side of the Hawker Centre in Larkin Sentral that has been featured in Many Food Blogs. 🤔 Even when chit-chatting about Larkin Foods with Local Grab Drivers, 🚗 almost all of them mentioned this Particular Stall. 😳
Its a Very Non-Descript Hawker Center type of Fish Soup Stall located at a Far Corner that is run by a Pair of Elder Couple and 1 Elderly Lady picking Veggies at the Front Table. 🧓 Other than me and a Few Customers, there were No Long Queues as of 7.19am on a Thursday Morning. 🌞 The Owners were Polite and Friendly and were slightly amused when I ordered just the Fish Soup with No Carbs. 😅 It took about 7 Mins for the Dish to be served up.
I was immediately impressed by how Large the Bowl was which looks like it is Chocked Full of Ingredients. 👍 It also had a Delicious Savoury Aroma wafting from it that Smelt Slightly Fishy but Not Overly So. 😋
Upon my 1st taste of the Soup, again I was impressed with the Solid Robust Fishy Taste that tastes 鲜 and not 腥. 😋 Savoury Hot and Comforting, Saltish but Not Overly So. There is a Noticeable Sourish Note which is likely Powered by Either 酸菜 Kiam Chye or 酸梅 Preserved Plums. 🥬
I also tasted an Undercurrent of Anchovies that was probably used as a Soup Base. 👍 Having said that, I also tasted a Slight Bit of MSG used though its not alot. 🤔 This is Overall a Solid Robust Level of Fish Soup that tasted like there are Noticeable Effort being put into it. 👍 Of course I dissected the Dish as I always do to check.
The Ingredients in this Fish Soup consists of:
🐟 5 Relatively Thick Cut Pieces of Fish Head.
⬜ 4 Pieces of Soft Tofu
🥬 Veggies, Fried Shallots and Scallions
2 of the Fish Head Pieces are Fat and Meaty as you can see in the Photo, while the rest were more Boney. 🐟 According to the Owner, the Fish used that day was "Angoli" or Sea Bream / Goldband Snapper. That said, he doesn't exclusively use this Fish all the time but rather whatever is Freshest available. 👍 I absolutely agree on his Claim of Freshness. 👍 It was Very Clean Tasting and Not at all Overly Fishy.
What was Unique was the Bite Texture of the Meat which had a Tender somewhat Springy and Bouncy Bite and doesn't flake easily like how you'd expect a Fish Meat to behave. 😳 It was so Moist and Delightful to the Bite! 😋 The Soft Tofu Pieces were most certainly from a Package and they were Soft and Creamy. 🥬 Veggies had a Decent Soft Crunch and I liked the Fried Scallion Pieces which injected the Dish with an Additional Savoury Oil 油香味 Presence. 😋

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts
At the Price of RM17.00 (S$5.20), this was Not Super Cheap but I still felt it was Affordable for what it was. 👍 The Soul of this Dish for me was undoubtedly how Robust Savoury and Comforting the Soup was. 😋 It definitely tasted like there was Alot of Work and Care done to it, and it wasn't just a Typical Cheap MSG Focused Affair. 👍
Heck in fact, drinking this Soup 1st thing in the Morning actually felt Nourishing, Warm, Comforting and even felt like it was "Healing" to drink this if it makes any sense. 😄 The other Main Factor why I liked this Dish was really How Fresh the Fish tasted. 🐟 I'm not kidding about the Freshness btw. It was so Fresh, that I didn't even bother to dip them into any Condiments and just ate them as is with Zero Jelak. Superb. 😋
Culinarily I was so impressed that I just simply went up to the Friendly Owners to Compliment and gave them a Solid Thumbs Up. 👍 They were understandably surprised but appreciated the Gesture. If you enjoy Fish Soups and are ever here in this Larkin Sentral Hawker Centre, 🐟 I highly recommend to give this Stall a Try. Now I understand why this is so Famous and Highly Raved for many people. 👍
