If you are Well Versed on Famous Food Eateries in JB, the name "Hua Mui" should not be unfamiliar to you. This is a Famous Franchise that specializes in Hainanese Chicken Chop.
The other Famous Chicken Chop Franchise that it competes with is "IT Roo" which apparently was awarded "Best Chicken Chop in Malaysia in 2003" I have given a review for this previously.

I first saw this Hua Mui when I was in Jalan Tan Hiok Nee. Have always wanted to try this but it is always Full House even on Weekday Mornings so I never got the chance. Absolutely Delighted to see a Branch located right here in Taman Sutera Utama.
Its a Big and Airy Non-Airconditioned Restaurant, and although not Full House, was still quite Crowded on a Friday Morning. The Staffs are busy and won't greet you when you arrive, so you have to Self-Service. Its the type where after you have written what you want, you press a Bell at your Table for Service.

3 Layers Coffee (Cold) = RM6.90

I was intrigued by their "3 Layer Coffee" because this reminds me of Kuching's Specialty. Although this was Coffee and that was Tea.

The Drink was served up in 3mins and it looks nice and does have 3 Layers although not Super Seperated, but Ok I felt it was still acceptable. The Coffee taste Rich and Creamy and while it's not Super Strong, it can still wake you up.

Hainanese Chicken Chop = RM18.90

Their Famous Chicken Chop was served up in 10mins and looks Nicely Fried with a Beautiful Fried Aroma. Its also quite a Big Sized Portion, roughly the Size of my Palm. I reckon this is made with Both a Drummy and Thigh attached.

The Sauce is a Very Light Tasting Mushroom Sauce. It is really very Light and Gentle Tasting and unlike IT Roo's version. I don't think
五香粉 5-Spice Powder is used. Or if it is used, I reckon it was used very Sparingly. This is a very Nice and Light Sauce. There were some Peas in this Sauce and they are Super Soft and Disintegrate fast in your Mouth. Normally Peas tend to taste Mushy and they can easily overstay their Welcome. Not the case here. The Peas are done just right.

I love the Batter. It is Very Thin and Lightly Breaded and Very Lightly Crunchy. Doesn't taste Overly Oily. Chicken Meat is Plump and Juicy. There is a Very Light Salt Marination and Not Overly Fried. Chicken Taste is not overpowering and it's not 重口味. Amazingly the Whole Thing tastes Very Light despite it being Fried.

I appreciate that the Potato Wedges on the side look like they're made of Actual Cut Skin-On Potatoes. This is a Much Higher Level compared to IT Roo which uses Supermarket Store Bought ones. The amount of Wedges looks like they used 1 Whole Small Potato. Again, this tasted Light (I think you can start to see a pattern here right?) Not Overly Salted and taste very Elegant!

Love the Baked Half Tomato here, whose main job is to help further cut any Greasiness. Good choice here. And when you drink the 3 Layer Ice Coffee, it helps to cut down even more Greasiness. Amazing!

The Correct Way to eat this, is of course to Banjir the Sauce all over the Chicken Chop which makes it very Visually Appetizing.
The Chicken Chop pairs Beautifully with the Sauce and having a Slight Crunch mixed with a the Savoury Sauce results in a Very Umami and Light Tasting Combo. That said, this will get Soggy fast, so you need to eat this quickly.
Because of how famous this Hua Mui is, I had always thought that it would probably be too "Touristy" and Overrated. This is absolutely not the case. In fact, tasting this Chicken Chop shows me WHY they are Famous. Compared to IT Roo, this is a Much Higher Level Chicken Chop. Everything in this Dish compliments each other Perfectly. Nothing tries to upstage each other, not even the Bloody Peas which can so easily screw up the Dish. I especially appreciate that they use Real Potatoes for their Wedges instead of taking the Easy Way out by using Supermarket Store Frozen types.

The Soul of this Whole Dish is really how Light Tasting everything tasted and was Not Overly Greasy. So Light and Smooth! This Chicken Chop has alot of thought gone into it's design.

The fact I can even find a Piece of Drummy Bone shows that this is not just Premade Chicken Chops. I have never found any Bone in a Chicken Chop before.
This shows that Hua Mui actually go thru the Effort of taking a Whole Drummy + Thigh, debone and flatten it. This takes abit more effort to do, but at least this shows that the Chicken Chop are most likely not a Pre-Made Supermarket Product.

How the heck did IT Roo win "Best Chicken Chop in Malaysia" especially when they use Store Bought Potato Wedges compared to Hua Mui's Real Potato Wedges? Kelong is it? I'm sorry but I feel Hua Mui EASILY beats IT Roo in terms of Quality. Everything in Hua Mui's Dish is Real 真材实料, 真功夫.
The Asking Price of RM18.90 (S$5.41) for their Chicken Chop feels Expensive, but its worth the Effort and Quality showcased here. And Everything for a Combined Total of RM28.90 (S$8.28) is Worth the Money to give this a try.
