This place is very Popular. Even the Friendly Grab Driver I took 🚗 highly recommended this place when we were discussing about Eateries in Taman Johor Jaya. 🤔 When I arrived, even on a Thursday Morning at 8.30am, it was noticeably filled up with people even though it wasn't Full House. I can't imagine how insanely crowded it would be on a Weekend. 😅

The place has a Very Old School Kopitiam Look and is quite Big utilizing its Alleyway by the Side to make an Outdoor Eating Area. 🤔 There is also a Very Adorable Cat that roams this Area and she was such an Adorable Cutie! 🐱 (Check out my Photos to see how Manja she was!)

------------------------------------
Unique Dim Sum Category Classification and Ordering System

The Most Unique Part of this place is that there are No Physical Paper Menu. 📃🤔 Instead, within the Restaurant itself there are 3 Sections dedicated to Different Type of Dim Sums:

1) Steamed Dim Sum Section (These are the Siew Mais, Har Gaos and Dim Sums normally served in a Bamboo Basket)

2) Bao Section (These are of course all the Various Dim Sum Baos)

3) Fried Dim Sum Section (This is a Small Heating Cabinet that holds all the Fried Stuffs)

In addition, there are no individual prices for each Dim Sums but instead they are classified under the following Categories:

小点 translates as (Small Stuffs) Example of this would be the Siew Mai I ordered.
大点 translates as (Big Stuffs) Example of this would be the Har Gao I ordered.
炸点 translates as (Fried Stuffs) Example of this would be the Carrot Cake I ordered.
包点 translates as (Bao Stuffs) Example of this would be the Char Siew Bao I ordered.
猪肠粉 is the (Chee Cheong Fun Category). I didn't order any CCF from this place.

Actually there is a Menu in Chinese within that Elaborates on this More (As shown in my earlier Photo). 📷 However, while this is quite intuitive for a Native Mandarin Speaker, Folks who are not Fluent in Mandarin might feel Overly Intimidated when trying to order from this place. 🤔 (And the Overly Aggressive Staff does not really help much as you will read on later) 🤔

If you are not Fluent in Mandarin but still want to come visit here, my recommendation is to just go to each of the Sections, and just point to whatever you feel you want to eat, 👉 then go back to your table and wait for your food.

Char Siew Bao and Carrot Cake were served up almost immediately after I ordered, and the finally the Siew Mai and Har Gao were served up after 8 Mins. Very Impressive Timing considering the Amount of Customers that was there during that time. 👍

------------------------------------
烧卖 Siew Mai (小点) = RM6.50

Actually, there are Various Different Types of Siew Mai and I just randomly picked one. 🤔 Since there are no Menu, I really have no idea what is the Exact Name of the one I chose. 😅

Size is noticeably small, and it was Very Hot with a Bouncy and Juicy Texture. Although made from Pork, the Porky Taste is Very Mild and I thought it tasted more Prawny 🦐 than Porky. 🐷 Skin was thin and fragile. This is an Above Average Siew Mai. Not Especially Mind-Blowing, but Above Average. 👍

------------------------------------
虾饺 Har Gao (大点) = RM6.80

Bouncy and Juicy to the Bite and I like that the Filling within is filled very Full with Large Pieces of Prawns. 🦐😋 Skin was not too thick nor too thin and was just right. Again, an Above Average Har Gao. 👍

------------------------------------
Carrot Cake (炸点) = RM6.50

THIS was the one that many people raved about on Google Maps and I agree with them. 👍 The Skin is Crispy and Light as you'd expect, but the thing that really hits the Spot was the Beautifully Soft and Almost Creamy Melt in the Mouth Cake Meat Texture. 😋 In addition, there is a Very Prominent Fragrant Taste of Shallot Oil within that brings this over the Top. ❤️

The Only Other Carrot Cake Meat that has this Super Soft Melt in Mouth Texture I've eaten so far in JB is "Changman Dimsum" in Bukit Indah. 😋 But I feel the Shallot Oil taste in this one is much stronger and much more Fragrant. I think this may be the Best Dim Sum Carrot Cake i've eaten in JB by far. 😋 This is a MUST TRY if you are here! ❤️

------------------------------------
叉烧包 Char Siew Bao (包点) = RM3.00

Quite a Big Sized Bao, the Bun is Soft and Fluffy and has a a Melt in Mouth Texture. I especially love the Fillings they used for this one. 😋 The Char Siew Meat is cut in slightly larger pieces than normal and the Lovely Sticky Not Too Sweet Sauce really pairs very well with it. 🍯😋 This was a Very Delicious CSB and I easily gobbled this down within Seconds! Hahaha! Another MUST TRY if you are here! 😄

Why did I give my Lowest Score for this Place? 🤔

As I mentioned, there were several factors that lead me to score it the way it is:

1) Very Aggressive Auntie Staff

When I first arrived to the place, I was allocated a seat so I went over to try to sit down. At the same time, there is this Auntie (She mans the Bao Section) approached me and even before my Butt was seated properly on the Seat, she was aggressively "Pi Li Pa La Pi Li Pa La" bombarding me with all sorts of information. 😅

Obviously I had no idea what she was trying to say because I haven't even sat down for goodness sake. 😅 When I politely asked her to repeat what she said, she gave me this VENOMOUS LOOKING Glare that freaked me out a little. 😳

When I finally got back my composure, I again asked her politely if she had a Menu that I could look thru, 📃 and her reply to me was a Very Aggressive and Angry Tone: "没有MENU! 我就是MENU!" (Translation: THERE ARE NO MENU! I AM THE MENU!) 😳 I almost wanted to shout back "你发什么死人脾气!" 😕 but I refrained and tried to cool down. From that point onwards, I decided to ignore her and just explore the place on my own.

Remember the Unique Ordering System that I mentioned and the 3 Different Sections? I had the help of the Chap from the Steamed Dim Sum section who was luckily much more friendlier in explaining the system they have here. 👍

When I eventually decided to order the Char Siew Bao, I purposely avoided her and chose another Staff Member to help. When this 2nd Staff Member asked where I sat, this Auntie rushed up and shouted "我知道他坐哪里!" What the Heck is her Problem? 😕

2) Staff Smoking right next to me where I ate. 🚬

As I was seated at the Outside Alleyway area which was More Cooling, and as I was eating, I smelt Cigarette Smoke and literally right beside me was a Staff busy puffing away on his Cigarette and chatting on his Phone. 🚬😕

What to do? Just keep quiet and discreetly moved my stuffs to a further table away from the Smoker. I called for a Staff who came over and helped me change my Table Number on my Receipt. At the same time I think the Smoking Staff realized my actions in avoiding him and himself paiseh moved away to smoke somewhere else. 🤔

So if you are a Non-Smoker, I highly recommend to choose to sit in the Restaurant itself even though it may be more Stuffy instead of the More Cooling Alleyway Area. 🤔 Personally, I don't think he was Maliciously Purposely trying to Smoke next to me as I think it was probably just a Habit of his to smoke at that place.

3) Plate snatched away even when I was still eating. 🍽️

I have emphasized on this Cardinal Sin for a Dim Sum Place and this Place did it anyway. 🤔 Actually to be exact it was the same Aggressive Auntie that snatched away my plate after I finished my Bao. She didn't snatch away other empty plates or Bamboo Baskets that I had, just that particular plate that held the Bao. I even caught her giving me a Glare when she snatched it away. 😳

------------------------------------
Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

I'm sorry you have to read thru all that ranting. But that Aggressive Auntie Staff really spoilt my mood for this place. 😕 If her attitude is already so bad on a Weekday with lesser Customers, I cannot even begin to imagine how bad she is during Weekends. 🤔

Worse of all, I think she may be the Owner of this place. 🤔 This is the reason why I'm very wary of places that are Popular, because alot of times, when a place is Successful, the Owners usually will adopt an Arrogant Attitude towards Customers. 😕 Because to such Business Owners, it doesn't matter if you are not happy, they have PLENTY of other Customers BEGGING to eat at their place. 多你一个他过年,少你一个他也过年. 🙄

As for the Quality, while some of them are no doubt good, there are plenty of other Dim Sum Places that also have Good Tasting Dim Sums. You don't really have to come here specially just to eat this. 🙅‍♂️

If comparing prices, this Gui Yuan is also not the Cheapest Dim Sum in JB. 🤔 If you are not too Picky on Quality, "Hock Chiang Hin" in the Jalan Wong Ah Fook area which I reviewed previously is actually alot more Affordable, and may be the Most Affordable Dim Sum in JB so far. 👍

烧卖 Siew Mai: (Gui Yuan = RM6.50) / (Hock Chiang Hin = RM3.00)
虾饺 Har Gao: (Gui Yuan = RM6.50) / (Hock Chiang Hin = RM3.00)
叉烧包 Char Siew Bao: (Gui Yuan = RM3.00) / Hock Ching Hin = RM1.80)

Personally, I don't know if I was Unlucky or if that Auntie just didn't like me, but it was a Very Unpleasant Experience for me eating here. 😕 Perhaps me and that Auntie's 八字不合 that day. 😅
I'm sorry but I personally cannot recommend this place. 🙅‍♂️ Not a place I would return to again i'm afraid, I hope you have a better experience here than I did. 😕
