What is a Beef Tomahawk?

According to Google's AI Answer, this is a Thick-Cut, Bone-In Ribeye Steak that includes a long, French-trimmed rib bone, resembling a Tomahawk Axe hence the name.
Google AI amusingly continues to describe it as having a "Show-Stopping Presentation". Oh it certainly was. But before I describe it further, lets talk about the Restaurant itself.

About this Steakhouse Restaurant

Located in Taman Tasek actually, this is also located a few steps from Taman Tasek Medan Selera that I reviewed previously.
The Restaurant itself is a Large Building with a Classic Western Steakhouse type of Interior. The Place doesn't look new and from the looks of it has probably been around for many years already.

Nice Classic Wooden Furnishings with a Classic Dim Lighting, it was Nicely Air-conditioned with Soft Piano Instrumentals playing in the Background. Perfect for a Couple's Night Out. I thought it was adorable that one of the Table here was made to look like a T-Bone Steak.

When I arrived here at 11.30am on a Weekend Morning, it was just Me and 1 other Couple. A few more customers joined in later but even at 1.00pm it was still relatively empty, never crowded even on a Weekend Afternoon.

The Staffs are Friendly and Polite and I think the Lady who served me is from Myanmar? She's also Polite and tries her Best. That said, when I ordered the Tomahawk on the Menu though she seems abit flustered. I reckon this is probably her 1st time having a Customer request for it?

From a Smaller Table, I was nicely asked to change to a Larger Table actually because of how large the Tomahawk Steak is. Hahaha I've never eaten one myself before so I myself was intrigued.
She also had to get a Senior Manager to assist as she is not very fluent in English. The Manager was a Tall Friendly Indian Chap who spoke Very Good Polite English and definitely was Very Customer Service Focused. He nicely explained the Procedures and Cuts about how to go about getting my Tomahawk.

How to Order a Beef Tomahawk:

1) If you are ordering Steaks here, they have this Unique System whereby Customers are lead to their Fridge Section where they store the Steaks.

2) From here, you can choose the Exact Steak you want, the Weight of it, and whatever you fancy. I thought this was quite nice to be able to do this. Like choose Seafood like that. The Fridge looked very Cleanly Maintained. No Foul Odours or anything like that.

3) Prices are listed on the Steak itself so you will have an Idea of what to expect to pay.

4) When it comes to Variety of Steak, as you can see in the Menu, the ones they have are "Wagyu, Organic, Grain Fed and Angus". Organic and Grain Fed are the Cheaper Options and unfortunately they were not available that day when I went.

Didn't want to go for Wagyu because if you've read my previous Write-Up about Wagyu during my visit to The Wagyu Tavern (JB) in TUTA, The Word "Wagyu" is just a Very Generic Term, and not an Indication of Quality. I did want to try a A5 Wagyu Tomahawk, but a few factors stopped me:

1) Nowhere in the Menu is the word "A5" ever mentioned.
2) I don't see any A5 Certifications anywhere in the Restaurant
3) This is a Western Steakhouse, not a Japanese Restaurant. So perhaps A5 Wagyu is not their Specialty.

As I cannot confirm or Ensure what Grade the Wagyu is, so I dropped it and chose "Angus" instead. Angus is a breed of (Usually) Black Cow originating from Scotland highly prized for their Superior Marbling.

5) After you've made your choice of Steak from the Fridge, let them know the Done-ness you want for it and go back to your seat and patiently wait for it to be served up.

Protip: Medium-Rare is usually the Classic Doneness that Most People would go for when eating a Steak. But a Beef Tomahawk is Different because of how Huge it is. If you are ordering Steak from a New Place that you've never been before, I would recommend to order "Medium" instead. That is, unless you are someone who insists on "Medium-Rare".

Of course I calculated the time as I waited. The 1.5kg Beef Tomahawk took 37 Minutes. I made my Order at 11.23am and it was served up just nice at 12.00pm noon. ไธๅคšไธๅฐ‘ๅฐฑๆ˜ฏๅˆšๅˆšๅฅฝ. I haven't cooked a Beef Tomahawk myself but the Timings on Google seems about right. This is a Huge Chonky Boy.

Menate Mineral Water 1 Bottle = RM2.90 (Price Waived Off in Final Bill)

Ordered this because I don't see any Zero Sugar Drinks on the Menu, and this Place doesn't serve Alcohols. Perhaps because of that Already Huge Price Tag on the Tomahawk, they waived off the price of this Mineral Water. I thought that was very nice of them to do so. Nothing really special about the Taste, it really just taste like Regular Iced Mineral Water.

Angus Tomahawk 1.496kg (Medium Doneness) comes with Sides = RM613.36

Google AI certainly was right when it describe a Beef Tomahawk as having a "Show-Stopping Presentation". Hahaha this thing is HUGE!!
Adorably served on a IKEA Cutting Board with IKEA Utensils, the Whole Dish consists of 3 Brown Sauces, a Herb / Salt Condiment Dip, a Side Salad, A Small Pile of Freshly Boiled Veggies, 4 Scoops of Mashed Potatoes and of course the Huge Hunk of Tomahawk. When it first arrived and served up, it felt like an EVENT.

The Staffs were very nice and automatically without me asking offered to help me take Photo and Video of it. Apparently they will even help cut and serve it up for you. Hahaha I thanked them for the offer and decided that I will cut and process it myself instead. So instead of a Small Little Dinky Steak Knife, they passed me a LIteral Parang for me to Self-Service as I requested. Hahaha!

Before I describe the Main Event, lets get all the Other Items out of the Way first.

Quality of the Sauces and Condiments
There are 3 Sauces served when you order the Beef Tomahawk. Visually, they all look roughly the Same in Colour and Texture.

The Herb Salt Mix Condiment was a Saucer that consists of Coarse Sea Salt with a Mix of Various Angmo Styled Herbs like Oregano etc.

The Left Sauce

This was a Rich and Robust Tasting Mushroom Sauce. Gao Gao and Creamy, it almost tastes like a Mushroom Soup with a Delicious Mushroomy Flavour actually. Saltish obviously but not Overly So. You can almost drink this like a Soup even.

The Middle Sauce

I think this is some kind of BBQ Sauce. Almost the Same Profile as the Mushroom Sauce but this time with a Noticeable Sourish Tease and a Decent Savoury Taste.

The Right Sauce

Still using the Base Mushroom Sauce, this time there are Black Pepper added. Not the Very Spicy Black Pepper Taste, it leaves a Gentle Heat in your Throat.

As you can see, all of them use the same Mushroom Sauce Base and slightly modified.
Business-wise, this was a Sensible Thing to do to make 1 Sauce. I also have no issues with it Culinarily as the Base Sauce itself was decently done. Not just a Cheap and Simple ไบ”้ฆ™็ฒ‰ / Oyster Sauce / Mushroom Mix thickened with Cornstarch type of Gravy. Not Super Amazing, but at least there is Effort.

Quality of the Salad / Veggies

Obviously meant as the Palette Cleanser of the Dish, it was a Cabbage Mix with a Sweet and Tangy Mustard and Sweet Mayo Sauce. Clean, Cold, Fresh and Refreshingly Crunchy, I have no issues with this Salad. I also have no issues with the Variety of Fresh Greens which the Tomahawk was resting on. They were Freshly Boiled and Crunchy Clean.

Quality of the Mashed Potato

4 Scoops of this makes me think that this Beef Tomahawk is really meant for 4 People. It was Thick, Not the Very Creamy Type and although also Not the Gao Gao Buttery type, did have some Butter and Herbs incorporated within. Abit of the Drier Side, this needs some of the Sauces. Not Super Amazing but a Decently Made Mashed Potato.

And now we come to the Main Event!

As expected, this 1.5kg Absolute Chonker of a Steak was really intimidating. Well actually, to be fair, it was 1.496kg before cooking, and if we don't count the Rib Bone, I reckon the Actual Amount of Beef you're getting is probably around 1.1kg give or take?

Taking that Huge Parang of a Steak Knife, I prepared to cut it and ...

WHOOOSHH!!!! I was legit surprised that the Knife just went through this Huge Hunk of Meat like Butter! Trust me when I say there is NOT A SINGLE FEELING of Resistance like how you'd expect when cutting a Piece of Steak.

Beautifully Glistening Meat as you can see and I haven't start eating it already can see it so Juicy already.
Nicely Cooked as expected from a Medium Doneness, for me this was Neither Too Red nor Too Dry. ่ฟ˜ๆฒกๆœ‰ๅƒ,ๆˆ‘็œ‹ไบ†้ƒฝ้ซ˜ๅ…ด.

How does this thing taste like?

The 1st Thing that surprised me was how similar in taste the Outer Crust resembles a Char Siew.
That Classic Smokey Sweet Taste Profile is Unmistakable.

Obviously this is Beef, not Pork, but the Sweetness of this Outer Crust tells me alot that a Similar Marinade or Rub has been used. Definitely a Honey Rub or at least Sugared Water in order to get that Distinct Caramelized Crust and Sweetness. Beautifully Done.

The Meat itself was Tender, Smooth and Soft and surprisingly Not Beefy at all.
None of that Classic Taste of Beef that you expect, Not even a Little Bit.

While its not like A5 Wagyu Sirloin dissolve in Mouth, it was still Superbly Tender without any Firm Meat Fiber Texture.
The Meat so Juicy, it felt like I ate a "Meat Sponge" if it makes any sense.

When I do reach a Fattier Part, the Fat does melt and dissolves cleanly, not like those Semi-Solid type of Beef Fat you'd expect when you eat a Steak. This Tomahawk was So Clean and Zero Jelak Tasting that I solo finish Half of the Tomahawk without even bothering to dip any Sauces. This was how Clean Tasting it was for me.

Ultimately though, it is still a 1kg+ Steak so inevitably, Meat Jelakness will still creep in so I had to Dapao Takeaway.
Hahaha. This is really alot of Meat to handle for a Solo Diner I'll admit!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

Including Service Charges and Taxes, this 1.5kg Angus Tomahawk here with Sides cost RM680.85 (
S$215.20)! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

To put it in Context, this Meal is even more Expensive than the RM577.70 (S$187.00) A5 Wagyu Buffet I previously had at
The Wagyu Tavern (JB) at TUTA back in Oct 2023. As such, this is probably the Most Expensive Meal I've ever eaten in Johor Bahru by far. ๐Ÿ’ธ

That said, I did a bit of research to compare how much a Tomahawk Steak cost in Singapore. ๐Ÿค” Using a SG Restaurant appropriately called "Tomahawk.com.sg" ๐Ÿ˜… as a Rough Comparison, the Price is S$20.00 per 100g (1.5kg and above) Not Including Service Taxes, eating a 1.5kg Tomahawk in Singapore cost at least S$300.00++ ๐Ÿ˜…

I guess its still considered More Affordable to eat Tomahawk in JB compared to SG? ๐Ÿค” (I acknowledge that this may not be a Fair Comparison because of various other factors. This is just a Very Rough Comparison so take it what you will.)

Price aside, I enjoyed the Dining Experience. The Tomahawk itself was Well Made, Well Cooked and Superbly Delicious.
So Soft and Tender, it was really Amazing to have my Knife literally just slice through it like Butter without much Resistance.

Beautifully Clean and Non-Gamey, this was a Surprising Steak that doesn't even taste Beefy. As I mentioned in the Main Review, it was so Clean Tasting that I could even finish Half of it Solo without even bothering to dip any Sauces. I'm not a Beef Connoisseur, but a Beef like this is Top Marks in my Books.

Culinary Wise, it can be Challenging to cook such a Huge Hunk of Meat because you need to have a Good Control of Temperature lest you get an Uneven Roast. So to be able to get such a Proper Roast within the Reasonable Timing of 37 Mins is indeed Really Very Good.

I also have no issues with the Service Level of this Restaurant. Although that Myanmar Serving Lady needed help from her Senior, I could tell she was earnest and tried her best. The Senior Manager that reached out to me was a Very Friendly Cordial Gentleman who made the Experience feel even better. The Lads who offered to help me take Photo and Video was also much appreciated.

What I am concerned was how relatively Quiet, not a Full House Situation even on a Weekend Afternoon. This is a Really Nice Steakhouse Restaurant and I hope they can survive. Looking from the Age of the Place though, I'm sure they'll do fine as they've probably been around for awhile.

Yes, this Meal has officially overtaken and now holds the Record of the Most Expensive Meal I've had in JB, but I enjoyed every minute of it and I felt my Money was Well-Spent. Actually it could be slightly cheaper if their Organic or Grain-Fed varieties were available.

If you are ok with the Prices on the Menu, I can recommend to give this place a try. I'm glad that I had such a Good Dining Experience with my First Ever Beef Tomahawk. As such, I have no issues giving this place my Highest Top Score. Highly Recommended indeed.
